Rifle Scopes Anyone use a 36X scope for working up loads?

Been thinking about getting a Weaver 36X benchrest scope to use when working up loads. Anyone else use a high power scope like this only for the purpose of load development? Is it a worthwhile investment or just a waste of money?

I've thought about it a hundred times, I need to for sure. That or a Nightforce NXS 8-32 that could pull double duty on some other rifle.

Well, I went ahead and pulled the trigger and ordered a Weaver 36X. Yep, a NF 8-32 could pull double duty, but I'd sure feel bad having a scope like that just sitting around and not in use most of the time. I won't feel bad using a relatively inexpensive scope like a Weaver 36X just sitting around.

The Weaver T-36 scopes are EXCELLENT in that role and for a rifle that is dedicated for targets only. I used to run one many years ago and it was an excellent scope for punching holes in paper at distances, but not much else.

MidwayUSA sells the T-36's now, but they are running north of $400 without any of the applicable discount codes (price varies a little depending on the reticle you go with). I have been thinking of picking up another for a .22LR project after I was assured by some other members here that they work well at closer ranges also (50yds).

are you using a led sled with that? For me, too much mag makes grouping harder. Would be interested to see how it goes for you.

No, just a traditional rest and bag, I use a Hart front rest and a rear bunny ear sand bag. If you're set up right, the higher magnification should aid you in shooting better groups.

They show up on the benchrest forums all the time in great condition for $300 or less. I have one a 223 bolt gun and I love it.

why would higher magnification make your groupings larger? That seems counter intuitive

When I was doing 22 benchrest that's what most all of the guys were using on there rigs. Some had the 36x and 45x Leupolds but most went with the Weaver for the cost/benefit ratio. Good scopes Id say. I have an 8-32x44 BSA that I keep around just for shooting groups and load development. The optics suck but it does fine on 32x at 100 yards for what I need.

My buddy uses a 24x weaver for just this reason. The glass is surprisingly clear for a low cost scope.
