Hunting & Fishing Anyone using .257 roberts. for deer hunting?

Re: Anyone using .257 roberts. for deer hunting?

I have a 24" fluted 257 Roberts Ackley Improved barrel for my encore, it's a Match Grade Machine custom barrel though. Still fire forming brass for it but it's a shooter with the 115 grain Berger VLD hunting bullets. Shot a 9 pointer in northern MO last year with it. Really handy little rifle.

I shoot .257 Roberts for hunting, have shot deer and antelope with it. Love the caliber, light recoil but up to the task!

I personally like the 100 grain loads, but 117 or 115 are good too.

Any specific questions on it?

Encore handgun or rifle?

Either way, reload for it and get it's true potential.

Run the 100 grain TSX at the upper end of the velocity range and kill stuff.

Don't be tempted with the 115 grain TSX in that chambering......

I have a Model 70 Featherweight in 257 that is my deer/antilope hunting rifle. Been using it for over 20 years and it's never failed me.

It's accurate and effective, I nomally use 90-100 weight bullets. I don't use fancy bullets, Hornady SST work quite well.

The only problem is I need two of them, my youngest son and my Granddaughter both claim it. Told my wife that when I die, just flip a coin.

My prized rifle is a Pre 64 M70 in 257 Roberts. It's pretty finicky but loves the 115 BT and 120 Part. From deer to elk.

That is one beautiful rifle.

I finished up a sighting in session today with a few of my hunting rifles. One of them being a T/C Contender in .257 Roberts. The barrel was custom made and I only shoot minimum loads through it due to chamber pressures. This is one of the most accurate guns I own. Here are the results from some test loads I worked up. They are 117gr Sierra spitzer bt's with 30.5gr of IMR4064 powered by a CCI BR-2 primer.

The shot on top of the group was my mistake. I haven't shot the rifle in years and forgot how light the trigger is. The larger group is three shots, 100 yards, slight wind blowing left.

I think you'll be very happy with the cartridge for deer.

Has anyone grouped this cartridge from 500-1,000 yards?
