Got the range all set up today for this weekends match. Added one new target for the finale. If they split the bullet on the axe and have any of their 5 rounds left they can shoot and try to break the matchsticks showing thru the holes in this target. I was initially going to use this piece of steel and make little swinging or drop down plates behind it for a stage but think I like this better. I made it to pin on top of this old target so I can take it in and keep the clips from rusting.
My Son and I tried it and if you're nuts on with windage it's pretty easy to get them all but be careful and have your elevation set right. Odd distance and it's easy to clip the top or bottom of the holes which result in a penalty. By accident I noticed that when I put the top matchstick in it hung down and was visible thru the small middle hole. I might move it out some and use it for a five round stage this summer.
Weather looks good at least until Sunday but by then everyone will be pigging out on chocolate and boiled eggs. Looking forward to seeing the shooting ringing this years steel.
I shot with the guys over on the far side of Ohio and their final stage had matchsticks, toothpicks and a playing card on edge. Right before the this stage I got to check my zero and it was way off but reset and did pretty good on it. All 4 matchsticks, both toothpicks and tore the playing card about half way thru, had two rounds left but didn't know I could keep shooting to try and finish ripping the card in two. Really fun stage and thought I'd try to add a bit of it to my match.
Had some problems with my splitting the bullet on the axe side plates. I had 3/16" this last time but with nearly everyone ricocheting down either side they took quite a beating and warped. A local guy cut me out two 4" x 6" 1/4" AR500 plates and they should hold up forever. They swing nicely when hit by fragments from a split bullet but I paint them for each new shooter just so we can see if any small fragments do impact the plate.
