AR-10 barrel questions

I have a few questions about upgrading my AR-10 with a better barrel. First question, does cold hammer forged barrels live up to the claims? I know they do in pistols, but was not sure about rifles. Does anyone provide CHF barrels for AR-10s? Or is it possible to get a CHF blank in 308 and have it turned and machined to fit my Armalite? I assume the CHF blanks would be the same as any other. Final question, is there an intermediate gas length between carbine and rifle on the 308 ARs? Thanks for helping out a noob

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

ArmaLite carbines use a midlength gas system, not the carbine length.

I don't know of anyone offering CHF barrels that can be fitted to an AR10.

Midlength IS inbetween carbine and rifle gas port/tube lengths.

The only length I know of inbetween rifle length and midlength gas system's is the "intermediate" length that Noveske uses for 18" AR15s.

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

carbine, mid and rifle. i used a standard rifle length ar15 tube in my 308 build. i ordered 18" rifle gas from a place called black hole weaponry. they usually make 18" with a mid, but i asked for rifle length.

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

So could I get a blank and tap it for Noveske's intermediate length gas system? Or will that not work on the 308 platform? Im sure I shouldnt try to change something tried and true, but I was curious if there was any new setups, or abnormal custom setups people have gotten to work. For example, the side charger handle people are coming out with now, and quick change barrels and what not. These are the kind of innovations I would like to incorporate into my Armalite.

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

Armalite has spent many hours designing their systems and its best to stay with a proven design. Hammer forged barrels are usually considered in the grand scheme of things to be the bottom of the barrel barrels. Most feel the cut rifled barrels the best that can be had, followed very closely by button rifled barrels. In terms of raw accuracy nothing will run with a cut or button rifled barrel.

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

I understand that cut rifled barrels are far more greater in accuracy. I figured CHF barrels are worth something if FNH Daniel Defense and HK use them in their rifles. Along with Bravo Company as well.

"I plan on staying under 800yds and would be fine with sub 2MOA at that distance"

You will need the best barrel you can afford.
A rifle capable of sub 2 MOA at 800 will need to shoot sub 1/2" at 100

Isn't 2 MOA 2" at 100 and 16" at 800?

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

You're right it is 16". But considering the conditions and other factors you may never shoot a 16" group at 800 with a 2 MOA rifle.

Re: AR-10 barrel questions

Im looking to be able to make a shot like that. Not consistently with every round in my mag. Of course it would have to be a nice, windless, dry day. I guess silhouettes would be a more realistic target at that distance. And more like 2MOA at 500yds. Either way, I after semi-precision. Not a sniper rifle, but sort of a designated marksmen type rifle.

A factory ArmaLite 20" barrel will suit you just fine I would think.

It may not be CHF but it is chrome lined and will be very durable and last a long time.

Edit: Where in Texas are you? Maybe someone local to you has one for you to try out.
