Did you get any hits? Without something like a 12 foot favor you were likely not anywhere near the target.

Re: On Steel With a AR-15 @1000yrds

Interesting. I see what I believe is the vapor trail leading out in the upper right on the shots in your video. Looks like it was adjusted for the wind.

Re: On Steel With a AR-15 @1000yrds

That's pretty cool. I like how it looks like the bullet is going right then hooks back into the target.... or maybe it was the camera angle.

Re: On Steel With a AR-15 @1000yrds

When you make such claims, it's a good idea to supply all the relevant information. The Nosler 77gr is not really at 1000 yard bullet, so now you can see why you were asked for clarification.

So, I went to JBM and armed with your numbers, I find that in 80gr temperature, at 4,500 feet of elevation you will have a drop of 38.5MOA from a 200 yard zero, at 1000 yards.

The video I saw showed hit short and to the right and then nothing else. If you say you did hit the 20X20, we will have to take your word for it, but remember that you bullet went subsonic before it got to the target and may not have been the most accurate.

If you want to go to 1000 yards with more accuracy, I suggest you look at the 80gr bullets and add more powder.

And did I see the paper target get ripped off the steel plate in the video?

SS that was good shooting that day, Gale and I had a great time as always.

I'm not sure If I'm seeing the same video as some of you guys but from what I can see and from being there.. he shot 9 rounds. Three were misses and the rest were hits. We were shooting at a 15"x20" steel plate painted Chevy orange stuck into the end of that berm. The plate is a weird shape, think the shape of the state of Nevada but flipped upside down.

1st shot hit
2nd shot misses to the left of the plate, you can see the dust
3rd shot misses low
4th shot hit
5th shot hit
6th shot hit
7th shot hit
8th shot misses right of the plate
9th shot hit

It was a nice evening out, finally not so deathly hot! The wind was going I'm guessing based on my hold over with my .300 WM wind was averaging 15 mph with a strong gust from time to time. We didn't have a kestrel with us so I can't tell you exactly.

Here is a video from the same distance, same target with my .300 WM you can follow the trace for a little bit. To the left of the target is a 2.5'x4' target stand with a paper target flapping in the wind. Target is the orange plate to the right of the target stand

You need to get out more often.

That's true, when I use my AR-15 at 1000 yards, I put sixty rounds out of 60 into the target, the F-Class target, regardless of wind.

Sterling Shooter is right, you need to get out more often. Maybe go to a match or something.

Re: AR-15 @1000yrds

Comparing what can be done with a custom built AR with 26" Krieger barrel topped off with a bench rest scope to a box stock RRA PP with a 3.5X10 mill dot is just silly.

Hand loads? Try 1x fired LC brass.
Bullets and powder are what ever Bass Pro had on the shelf that day.
A set of 30.00 RCBS SB dies.

Shooting off dirt and rocks out in the middle of the Mojave with out the benefit of a nice cement pad or a sunshade puts still in another equation into the mix.

Please,,, take the vid for what it is...Peeps just out having some fun.

I used to shoot DCM,30 years ago,,may get back into match shooting some day.

Yes on a known distance range with wind flags and sighters. Cut the guy some slack, he is out shooting 99% of the population and a good many of the shooting pop. First time I shot to a thousand I was excited also. Nice job!

Re: AR-15 @1000yrds

Some folks who are new to anything are so excited about the experience that they want to share the discovery with all. Thing is, most folks around here have been there and done that, so don't expect too much of Oh Wow from any here who do indeed do it all the time.

And, BTW, good shooting at any distance has nothing to do with wind flags and sighters.

Not comparable, think again slick, it's all the same, sight alignment and trigger control, supported by a steady position. You can ignor me, but not the facts.

Re: AR-15 @1000yrds

Sterling we didn’t make and post the video to go fishing for any “oh wow’s” here on snipers hide. It was more directed to the out of the box accuracy of the Rock River Predator Pursuit and the demands on the shooter especially with the conditions at the time being less than optimal.

We took it back to 600 yards and while I was watching the trace you could tell the lighter rounds were not going to hold up past 600 yards with anything stronger than a gentle breeze. Then Sonic Sammy got a hold of those 77's and we were so impressed by their performance that we thought we would take it back to 1k. We shoot 1k yards and beyond all day long with our .30 cal’s but haven’t taken any shots like that with .22 cal rifles... Hence the video..

Oh and I have another achievement for you to add to your signature

Thanks for explaining how you're wasting time these days; but, please, don't resort to vulgar language to express yourself. It's not polite and it diminishes your persuasivness.

Re: AR-15 @1000yrds

Dude, don't expect your "Hey y'all, watch this!" video to be free from critique in a forum about marksmanship, especially since executing the firing task has little to do with marksmanship. Also, your profanities, reminiscent of the stereotypical playground bully, does not play well in a forum where, for the most part, comments are well informed, cordial, and mature. In other words, your green teeth are showing.

you gotta admit, it's a lil bit funny? No?

Btw I saw the same shooter hitting steel IPSC silhouette 7-8 times in a row only a few days before at 1k. We were impressed at the time and it's doubtful the original post was looking for any ooooh's and aaaaaah's. Bottom line: couple guys having fun in the desert shooting guns, and shooting them well... myself excluded

Almighty analysis, I don't think so, but for certain, it was astute, as well as accurate. And, no, I don't think personal attacks on me are funny , for a multitude of reasons, none of which the juvenile mind can comprehend.

BTW, my initial comment, "you need to get out more often", was, I think, an appropriate statement regarding the poster's comment about the 1000 yard activity being a unique one, which it was not.

+1 The 1000 yards iron sight match in '97 during the Texas state match was won with an AR match rifle shooting against Magnums and Palma guns. The same match in '98 was won again with the same Bill Wylde built upper. The feat was accomplished by two different shooters.

I'm not sure why you came to the 'Hide to begin with, but Sterling Shooter is one of the guys who has the street 'cred to speak into this game like very few. The letters in his sig line actually mean something. Wise up and learn.

I dont dispute he has been around the block either, but maybe was having a bad day and made some comments that weren't needed. Little harsh towards somebody that was happy to reach out to a grand with a 223.

Re: AR-15 @1000yrds

I dont know about you guys but i cant even get the bullet to punch through the paper most of the time at 800 yrds. that being said a few of us smacked a dead tire and rim out in nevada (rocket mountain) lazed at 1200yrds. you could see the bullet spin around the inside of the wheel. It also took about 50 rounds to get on target and we were well above the target in elevation.

we are talking about 5.56 right?

Yes .556, He's was using a 77 gr bullet out of that 20" 1-8" twist barrel. He has since sold that rifle and has another Rock River that does the same thing!! RR makes some good stuff or he got lucky twice in a row!

Where we shoot is about 2000 ft ASL so that helps too

We have done it @ 1000M and 1000yrds the vid was shot at 1000yrds.
Its kinda nice having a 1,500m range 17 miles from the house.
BLM land never closed.
Been shooting on this spot for years and have it marked out back to 1,500yrds. The best part of it is you can drive a car too and from your target.
