Has anyone tried to compete in tactical matches using a 6mm AR Turbo or a 6mm Fat Rat.

I would think a 105 grain .532 BC bullet running ~2900 fps out of an accurate AR 15 platform would be competitive. I know you would suffer at the extended ranges like 900+ but you should hold an advantage on everything else and that is where the majority of the shooting is. Am I missing something.

It's a novel concept in theory, just not a lot of guys going that route. For the most part I think it's just too easy to get better performance out of a bolt rifle. I'll let you know how it works out if I ever get mine done.

I know a couple people getting 2850 with theirs, so that's why I put ~2900.
You are correct a bolt gun is less finikie than a auto but the gap continues to close every year. I bet 5 years from now you will start seeing more autos

Re: AR 15 for competitions

I've been shooting a Turbo 40 for the last year and a half for NRA Highpower competition and have had excellent results. As the Cracka above mentioned, 2900 fps is not realistic. I've had some good shooting loads at 2850, but at that speed, primer pockets are worn out after 3 firings max. My current load shoots around 2740 and is extremely accurate to 600 yards. It shoots quite well at 1000 yards also, but would not be my first choice for that distance. Fire forming loads are as accurate as I could ask for and I do almost all of my fire forming during matches at 200 and 300 yard lines. Lots of clean targets with the FF loads. 500-600 loads use fired brass.

I have 2 identical uppers, one is ready for re-barreling at 3500 rounds and the other has about 600 through it. They both shoot the same.

I probably wouldn't use it for tactical style matches as you will likely lose a LOT of brass and as mentioned above you will cry.

Good luck,
Erik

What cartridge would be the best at ranges up
to 8-900 yards out of an ar 15. I also shoot F class and thought it may be fun to use an ar for that also.

Re: AR 15 for competitions

Well, if you are set on an AR15-sized receiver, the Turbo 40 or Fat Rat are as good as any and a lot better than most. Definitely capable of shots at that range - like I said, I've shot mine a fair amount at 1k with good results. The 105 A-maxs and 105 hybrids are pretty impressive, ballistically. I'm not saying that you couldn't shoot the turbo at long ranges, because you sure could. Just that if you will be shooting at 800+ primarily, I would look at an AR10 sized platform in something like .243 or .260. If you'll only get out that far occasionally, it's a good choice.

I guess you could have one in 6mm with a really really long barrel. I never thought about it since f class out here is all single shot so no point in mag rifle unless novelty.
