So looking at building or buying an ar15 pistol and looking to see some other builds. The Springfield Saint Edge or the BCM Recce-11 is what I have primarily been looking at right now. I have 2 other BCM rifles (16" and 20") and there rock solid, but always open to other products. I have not shot a Springfield or really have any experience with them in the AR platform so any thoughts on the two or others would be appreciated.

Thanks

I picked up a Saint Edge a while back. I haven't shot it a lot, but it has functioned flawlessly and fun as heck shoot. I slapped a Steiner 1-4 on top, handy little setup.

Build it.

Build it....... It is always a learning process... You learn about all of the options, you learn about which supplier is top shelf and which one is in China, you learn about "shipping" parts/ shipping cost, the pleasure is in the chase and if something does not fit or function........ You will meet a lot of really sharp guys who gain pleasure in helping other's in this field.... We all had a "First Build"..... Start your scavenger hunt.

A 5.5” barrel in 5.56 completely neuters that round and makes it ineffective for anything other than plinking.
I've seen the Saint rifle, but had no idea the Saint PDW has a 5.5" barrel until your post. I agree with the 5.5" barrel being more of a novelty than a useful weapon. I went with an 11.5" on my pistol build, and consider 10.3" to be the minimum I'd use for 5.56. If you want to go shorter than 10", the .300 BLK is probably the way to go for serious use. If it's just a fun gun, then go with whatever tickles your fancy.

$1K you can build a very nice 10.3/10.5/11.5 inch pistol with nice parts if you have patience and watch for sales, etc. Or, you could buy a complete upper and build the lower.

Aero Lower - $80
BCM Complete uppper - $600ish
SBM3 - $120
BCG & Charging Handle - $200

$1,000

If it comes down to Springfield vs BCM.....go BCM. Otherwise, if you're handy, building is the way to get the gun you want.
I don't think its as clear cut as one would think. The edge has been getting quite a few good reviews. Now if we were talking the Victor then I would agree without hesitation and state BCM.

Only argument is resale value which may be more important to some more than others.

The upper was built by a local gunsmith; 10.5" barrel 1:7 twist 5.56 chamber. the upper is a billet without the forward assist. I think it's a Midwest handguard with a C-cut in the end.
Anderson Lower
OSS IFM6 suppressor
Cole-Tac Baby Python suppressor wrop
Nickle Boron coated BCG
Radian Raptor SD charging handle
Maxim PDW arm brace with JP heavy silent capture spring buffer
ARMS builder pack w/o trigger
Timeny Daniel Horner trigger
ERGO vertical pistol grip
EOTECH XPS 3-0 sight
Blackhawk singlepoint sling
Sure-Fire 1000 lumen weapon light

Thanks for all the info appreciate it!

I really have not made my mind up especially with the current pricing which is ridiculous. I would not go under 10" and would prefer to keep it 5.56 since other rifles are the same caliber and have plenty of ammo and magazines. I really have not explored the option of building it, but it has got me thinking now for sure.

Can't say I've looked into the Edge. I guess it depends on what the desired purpose is. All I can say is, for defensive purposes, BCM has a much better track record than Springfield when it comes to ARs.

Good info in here. I build all my AR's but there are some good factory options.

Someone brought me the issue of American Rifleman which had just came in mail this past Wednesday.

It featured 2 new Springfield pistols:
1.the PDW (Pdw brace and lots of other goodies)
2. The Evac (main points are: law folder AND Dolos quick detach barrel nut)

I'll attach a few pics

I'm anxiously awaiting a chance to fire a new 10.5 inch build ......highlights:
- form1 can
-law gen 3 folder
-jp scs with law adapter
-220 grains of OTM goodness
- surefire to shine a light on things

5.56 in a 5.5” barrel? No thanks.

I have a 4.5” .22 lr upper that i shoot in a pistol configuration and love it. So much so that I ordered a 4” 9mm barrel from Craddock for my Quarter Circle 10 9mm lower. Having said all that, couldn’t agree more regarding a 5.5” .223 barrel. It’s just a bad configuration for what was designed to be a rifle round.

I would agree with that. I haven't owned a BCM rifle (friends have them) but I've only heard good things. My one buddy doesn't like them because they don't "innovate" like the more expensive rifles but I guess thats the only negative comment I've heard.
