AR 15 w/ Thumbhole

I'm very partial to the thumbhole stock design. I'm considering buying the B&C Thumbhole stock for my precision AR (currently I have a standard A2 stock with an adjustable buttplate). It's not very common leading me to believe that either the design is terrible for an AR, for whatever reason, or that the idea simply has never caught on (which I find tough to believe with the popularity of the AR platform and the general proliferation of the thumbhole stock design across various other rifle platforms.

Have any of you used the thumbhole stock on an AR? Is it the standard A2 stock length (which I find on the very close end of acceptability for precision use)? Shorter? Longer?

Thanks.

Re: AR 15 w/ Thumbhole

well glad someone likes them i suppose. a lot of folks do not. i think the proliferation of their existence is simply gunban neutering to make good platforms more pc to the untrained eye of political morons...but thats just me. everytime i come across such a rig i am compelled to buy it and restore with a new non thumbhole configuration stock generally of the m4ish variety.

Re: AR 15 w/ Thumbhole

My friend has a laminated wood thumbhole stock that JP use to make on his AR-15. It feels good. Its not everyones cup of tea but he likes a nice piece of wood on his guns so I ordered him that one. He has been very happy with it. It is kinda hard to install cause of the safety detent spring but not impossible. It was also recommended to have it bedded to the lower to get full contact due to inconsistency in lowers. I sent it in to JP with his lower and they bedded it for him for $50 I think. His is just a tad longer than standard A2, by 0.50" or so. The grip has a palm swell and finger shelf.

Don't have the need for all of the bells and whistles of the Magpul.

The TH is not ugly, LOL! I rather like the aesthetics of the thumbhole design.

Though perhaps the origins of the TH may be to make them look less threatening (as if a pistol grip makes a difference), there are simply too many variations on the design through various platforms to conclude that it's the only reason for its proliferation, especially in gun friendly places (like my home state of Kentucky). I rather like the design and seek to change my rifles to TH at the earliest possible juncture.

In this case you specifically asked about the AR15 platform. I like the thumbhole stock on my Savage MkII BTV, it's comfortable and fits me well. In fact, I wouldn't mind trying one on a Savage 10FP, if such an animal existed. I don't see it being practical on an AR platform, but if it fits your need, go for it. After all, It'd be pretty boring if everybody liked the same things all the time, right? BTW, 'howdy, fellow Kentuckian!'

Re: AR 15 w/ Thumbhole

Fellow Kentuckian? Yep! Gotta love the Bluegrass State.

I asked because it doesn't seem very common. I'm not sure that I like it either, and I'm sure as heck not going to dump $120+ dollars without some reviews from those who have used it.

It may well not be all that practical. I simply like the control I feel I have over the rifle with a TH.

Re: AR 15 w/ Thumbhole

This is something that I am interested in hearing about as well. I have gotten to shoot one or two rifles with thumbhole stocks and the ergonomics worked very well for me personally. I guess I have never really even thought of one on an AR platform but it sounds interesting.
