Re: AR builf for beginners questions

Lets cut some of the work out. I am going to buy a Upper Reciever assembled, barrel, and chargeing handle, i do know this. I am ordering them this weekend. what else????

Re: AR builf for beginners questions

Well if you buy a complete upper all you really need is a lower reciever, trigger group, grip and stock with buffer tube spring and buffer!

Re: AR builf for beginners questions

The tools to build uppers are expensive. Unless this is something you are going to do a lot of, I'd suggest just buying a complete upper from a reputable company. Noveske, BCM, Daniel Defense.

A bench vise, action block, and barrel wrench? The money you save building it yourself will pay for the block and wrench easily. Most people have access to a bench vise.

Re: AR builf for beginners questions

I 've built several lowers and recently an upper, barrel wrench came with the forend I bought, nothing expensive about it.

Anywho, if you want to buy a complete upper, you'll also need a bolt carrier assembly.

As for the lower, low buck, get a basic lower parts kit, not so low buck, get one minus FCG, and order FCG or your choice, everybody loves Geissele. Then get stock kit of your liking, there are many availible with stock, receiver extension (buffer tube), buffer, spring, castle nut if required, otherwise buy all those parts seperate.

Tools required for assembling a lower, roll pin punches, small hammer, allen/hex wrench for pistol grip, and spanner wrench if getting a carbine stock. To make it easier roll pin starter punches, action/vise block for lower receiver. Armorer's wrench puts a bunch of neccesary tools in one place, but has more for the upper than the lower. Get yourself a book, schematic, or buddy if your AR knowledge is limited, its pretty simple.

Re: AR builf for beginners questions

What made me start assembling AR's was I couldn't find exactly what I wanted. That was back after the sunset of the 1994 AWB. Now there are so many fair options I wouldn't even consider building now. I started with a upper receiver block a armorers wrench and head space gauges. You don't need a lower block and they are more of a PITA than anything. The most difficult part of the lower is installing the pivot pin. Tools are made that make this operation a cinch and I highly recommend one.

Ok, if you have a complete lower and buy a complete upper, pull out the two pins and stick the upper on the lower, push two pins back in.

Is THIS what you're asking about the upper? Or are we back to building from buying?

Re: AR builf for beginners questions

Pork Chop,

Sometimes less is more, in this case we need more though.

Explain exactly what you are asking in a different way, we all understand you bought a complete lower, but what do you mean by "messing up" and "getting started".

Uppers complete can be bought for 399.00, ready to pin on that lower.

You can build it for the same cost as well but you will spend a good bit of time in doing so.

Best bit of advice I can give you if you build is to think ahead on the handguard and gas system length (carbine vs mid vs rifle length). There is nothing more humbling than buying a carbine style handguard to install on a mid length gas tube and block.

Brownells video series will get you started if you want to build as another user pointed out.

Peace,

BB
