I'm looking to replace my current 20" upper with a 16" uper, but I have a few questions.

I would like to put a rail system on it, but I'm not sure whether I should free float the berrel, or go in with a drop in rail.

I plan to shoot this to 300-400 at the most. I know that the army doesn't free float their m4s, and can hit ISP tarhets at 600 with acogs, but I'm not going to let that base my decision.

Would it do a great deal of good to free float it, or would there not be a big difference?

If you want to put a scope on it I would go with a free-float tube or rail and a gas block w/o front sight. If you just want a cheap blaster 16" carbine then it doesn't matter.

jmho but id say free float if a bipod is gonna be used a lot because a bipod will introduce more vibrations than your hands or sling. otherwise i wouldnt sweat a float tube. i have seen standard m4 grips carbines shoot nicer groups than free floated ones in some cases so theres no hard and fast answer really to the precision craving.

I plan to put an aimpoint or SPARC on it. I'd like to be able to hit man sized targets at 400, and that's pushing it. I don't need sub moa accuracy.

Well if you want it for a CQB type of rifle then It wouldn't matter since the aimpoint is only going to take up the rail space on your upper and not the rail. If you want a rail just for a FG or AFG then go with whats cheaper. What drop in rail were you looking at?

buy and build shay. you have ooffers for the tools. big joe will hook you up. dont get antsy, it costs more in the long run

If I free float it, I will probably end up with a yhm rail on it, and if I don't, it'll be a knights RAS.

I plan to have a light on it, and a sling. I might have a forward grip, but I'm ot sure on that.

Ill wait a little longer before I make any decision, but I want everything planned out beforehand so I can get it right the first time, not build a rifle for a year and not be able to shoot it.

I think I might just buy a new barrel and a rail system. Not going to free float it, as I won't shoot off a bipod and ill ohave a sling and a light attached.

you can always get a Knights RAS and down the road if you decide you can modify it to free floated, as I have done and posted a thread on the subject here

i'd just go free float, i was in the same situation, went drop in at 1st and ended up going FF later. could've saved some money going FF right off the bat.

and I need a gas block, I want the a2 style, but I dont want to have to use the pins. Does anyone make a standard styled gas block that doesnt use the pins?


In the back of my head, I am still considering not free floating the thing. I just dont see a point when I am going to shoot inside 400 yards. I will have a red dot on it, and if I can have 2-3 moa, I'll be happy... I'm a poor kid, and i can take the costs down if I dont free float the thing. I'm not looking for precision... Then I start thinking about barrel twist, I will shoot 55 fmj for the most part, so i believe that a 1-9 will be ok, and I wont need a 1-7 twist?

Why Delton? Have heard som good things and also some not so good about them. I prefer to stick with tried and true... Wilson barrels have been around for a long time and are known quality manufacturer just a thought....

unless you really want the M203 step cut in your barrel these might be a good choice....

I would go with a free-floated handguard, rifle length, a low-pro gas block, and then flip up front and rear sights mounted on the handguard. If you shop around and don't spend money on bling-bling shit you can have decent parts for similar money to a drop-in setup.

I have had good experience with del ton, and I'm happy with them. I ordered my ar during the scare, and I got it within a month, even though it was said to have a 6 month wait.

Not sure on how fast you are looking to buy either or, but I will be back to the range with my setup in teh next couple/few days.

Ive got teh SPARC on mine, and so far, not liking it. I feel it's TOO small. When I come up on teh rifle, just seems not enough area to get on target QUICKLY. The glass is not quite teh size of a nickel, and closer to a dime. I picked up the optics for CQB, so obviously wanting to acquire a target with not much fuss, and quickly. Again, just seems TOO small for my taste.

Food for thought...


Oh, maybe you have eagle eye's, and maybe it's just MY eye's, but I can tell you that there is no way I could hit a target at 400 with my SPARC on it.


EDIT:Not quite sure why you would want to try and hit targets at 400 yards with a Red Dot on it anyways though, now that I think about it

Hey Shay...now that I think about it, didnt you respond to my post when I ordered my Del-Ton? Too bad I never got mine after 6 weeks of waiting from them (ended up getting it from Cold Hand Arms in 2+ DAYS!!!)

Will have to look at my receipt again, but I think it was like $449 from Cold Hand, and they only charged me $8 SHIPPING! So, was $457, or something like that. So, I ended up saving like $100 by going with Cold Hand over going with Del Ton directly...

I say free float, the only drawback is with rail systems it tends to be heavier at least mine is. Noticable difference in accuracy even at 100yds.
