ar ?

Re: ar ?

Oh Lord...the better question you might ask would be what WON'T work with a standard AR-15 lower. Here goes (remember some of these are serious wildcat cartridges you won't find in your average AR parts/accessories catalog, but they work 100% in standard AR-15 lowers):

17HMR
.17Mach2
.22lr
.222 Remington
.25 WSSM
.204 Ruger
6.5 Grendel
7.62x39
5.56x42(SPC)cat
6x41(SPC)cat
6mmBanshee(Grendel cat)
6.5 Banshee(Grendel cat)
6.8SPC
6mmWOA
6mm Hagar
6mmAR
6mmAR turbo
458 socom
50 beowolf
338 spector
30HRT
300 Whisper
6mm/223
25/223
30/223
10mm
45acp
9mm
40 S&W
6BR
6BRX
6mmPPC
223WSSM
243WSSM
25WSSM
358WSSM
.50 BMG, .50 DTC, 408 Chey Tac, 338 Lapua Mag - for conversion uppers not using the AR-15's mag well...may require modification to fire control components, etc.

Re: ar ?

To the OP...I got your PM on which would be the best "long range" round out of those I listed. I figured I'd post here for the benefit of all and for additional input from others who may have more experience than I do.

From my own personal use, the 6.5 Grendel is a really serious contender out of the AR for a dedicated long-range rifle. I have personally shot a Sabre Defence 6.5G out to 600yds with sub-MOA results. I also know several folks who have had success with even longer ranges using the 6.5G. With 123gr Lapua Scenar reloads, the Grendel should remain supersonic to 1,000yds.

That said, some of the other 6mm and 6.5mm rounds should be excellent as well, but I have no experience with them.

Those are likely the best for magazine-fed AR-15 calibers, but don't overlook the .338 Lapua Mag and other "big bore" uppers for the AR as contenders. Ferret50/Spider Firearms builds some incredible conversion uppers for the AR lower that can achieve sub-MOA accuracy at extended ranges!
