Long range target/precision with a good punch at distance. I dont want to use the words tactical because it is just a hobbie.

How long a barrel are you willing to accept?
If you don't reload I would just suggest a .308.

The 308/7.62x51 is hard to beat in the AR-10 whether you reload or not. It is a tried and true performer for long range target out to 800yds (and further depending on your ammo and skill set).
If you do reload, there are a host of different offerings available these days that offer a ballistic edge over the 308, especially the WSM cartridges including 6.5WSM, 7WSM, 300WSM, etc. The 6.5CM is also a great round that will work in the AR-10 platform. However, none of those rounds really have much in the way or commercial ammo offerings that will allow you to get the most out of the cartridge in the AR-10, so you have to reload if you go down that road.

For long range or hunting?
6.5x47 Lapua would be IMO one of the best choices in 308 length.
Not sure about availability, but at least one 7.62 AR manufacturer has offered it in Europe over year ago.
There is nothing wrong with 308- but since you asked I presume 308 is not good enough...better start reloading...

.308 and save yourself the head ach. All the guess work is already done nothing to find out ballistic wise. This is just MHO because yes the 6.5s are the ballistic dream. But Ammo on the shelf, load data out the ass and dope for any range and any barrel length is everywhere. If this is not your first AR10 than go with something else for fun. Now I just got my AR10 finally Yesterday and this is what I asked myself before the perchase.

How ablout a 7-08? Same case (basically), better BC bullets, good performer, loaded ammo available, should feed the same with no mag issues. I know it's not the ultimate SA round, but IMO a step above the .308 and easy to deal with.
ETA: Armalite offers one in .338 Fed.
