AR15 Rear sight: LMT my only option?

I bought myself a S&W M&P15 Magpul spec. I'm gonna keep irons on it for a while. I've already got my .22 set up for bench shooting, this one's gonna be more of a blaster (though I may throw a Geissele SSA in it). Love everything about it except the MBUS rear sight, which is only adjustable for windage. What I'm after is a standard A2 rear sight with both windage and elevation adjustment.

I like the LMT rear sight. Its like somebody took a detachable carry handle and chopped the handle off it. Love it! Anybody have experience with it? Do I have any other (read: cheaper) options?

There are multiple options for the kind of sight you are thinking about...just depends on what, specifically, is your price range and what you ultimately want out of it. Yes...the LMT sight is expensive, BUT...it is of very high quality and unlike some other options out there in the market, it will hold onto your rail, stay sighted in, and not suffer from some of the slop and generally poor quality as "cheaper" alternatives. Here are just a few examples. The DPMS unit is of reasonable quality provided you aren't attempting to turn what amounts to a basic M4 carbine into a precision instrument with that sight selection. A little bit of low-temp loctite will resolve any wandering screws from backing out of the base that attaches to your rifle's picatinny rail and the sight adjustments themselves in my experience are good, as is the overall quality of the sight for what it is. The next one listed is an example of what your money buys "on the cheap" which is...well...not much. The airsoft-eqsue sights are generally crap in every respect. They are cheap, Chinese pot metal in construction and the sight adjustments generally have a TON of slop in them, along with poor quality mounting solutions that don't hold up to much shooting before they work loose...even if you do everything short of tacking them to your upper (joking of course, but serious about the poor quality).

Just to add...you don't really NEED an elevation adjustment on the rear sight if you are going to get the rifle sighted and use the same basic ammo for it. Sure, the rear adjustment makes things a little faster and you don't need the "tool" to adjust for elevation as you do with the front sight you already have on your rifle, but it just isn't an absolute necessity unless you just WANT it.

A BDC rear sight, such as the Matech, permits the shooter to address unknown distance scenarios with a battle sight zero set for 300 meters, and, for known distances scenarios, the sight can be hastily readjusted for on point hits from 400 to 600 meters.

And there's the fact that I can't find anything LMT in stock. . . I really do want that sight though. The point is, I'm not looking for some plastic flip up thing. I'm looking for a sight that can work as my primary sight.

Not the only option, plenty of others out there, but I will admit that I do really like my particular sample of that LMT rear iron. Great piece of gear. Then again, mine was cannibalized from an LMT rifle I picked up several years ago.

If you are any good working with your hands, I would recommend you find an used USGI carry handle and do the chop yourself. Recontour as required with a belt sander or files then refinish with some Moly Resin, Gun Kote or similar. That would be the least expensive thing to do and probably have the nicest finished product. HERE is how to do it...

If you REALLY DO WANT THAT SIGHT, then just go get it and don't worry about the cost as it'll be money well-spent as opposed to other lesser options that will almost surely fail and if you go to sell it, you'll at least have an item that will be worth something in the aftermarket if you want/need to sell it off down the road. The DPMS I mentioned above is a reasonable alternative at ~half the price, but it is NOT in the same class as the LMT sight in my experience. Your wallet knows your truth, so you make that call. The "chopped" carry handle options work, but in my experience, by the time you buy a quality one (same is true with aftermarket detachable carry handles as with BUIS...you get what you pay for in terms of quality/durability/etc.), then add up your time involved in cutting it, materials and time for refinishing, etc., you are better off just buying a quality product right out of the gate (but my time IS money and is better spent spending time with my family, shooting, reloading, etc. as opposed to projects like a CH chop...YMMV).

Just a thought wouldn't Troy or ARMS rear sights work for you? They are both high quality and I have used both with zero problems. i have S&W branded Troy rear sights on my S&W MP15 FT and really like them. I agree Magpul plastic sight are not my cup of tea.

I looked at those, but don't they only have windage adjustment? Not really an improvement over the magpul, other than the material their made out of, if that's the case IMHO

i'm a fan of the Matech BUIS that Colt uses, and the Knights one is really nice too. however, if you want an A2 style sight and cant find a LMT in stock (or you don't like the price) why not just take a carry handle and chop it down as suggested earlier? i've done that to a friend's gun, and it was pretty damn good looking after a little polishing on the buffer wheel... works great, removable, and all in all very effective

There is no need for elevation in a rear sight. Even the elevation on the M16 is hardly ever used except to 8/3+1 for zeroing at 25m.

If you want a fixed rear sight. Look at DD or LMT. Or just buy a carry handle.

I would personaly go with either the new Magpull Pro's or KAC. That way when you get an optic down the road, you don't have to replace the sites, and have the flexibility to fold it outa the way.

Don't give a dime to troy, they are the enemy and support Baby Murderer's and Anti-gun pieces of shit.

The LMT sights come up for sale on the options and accessories board quite often.

They are probably the first things sold by new owners. I have two sets not being used but I have this stupid idea that I must keep them for when my LMT is a collectors piece and I will need them and my taped up torque wrench which doesn't get used either for originality.

I replaced mine with KAC 200-600 BUIS. I love the KAC sights. They are accurate and fill my desire for a sight that I can diddle with at the rear.

Im feeling weak, If you want one of my sets $155 will get you front and rear brand new right out of my safe.
