Greetings. Newbie here, so bear with me. I am a pistol and revolver lover; have eight various. However, the politicians in Washington, DC have done such a lousy and self-serving job over the past few years that I am genuinely concerned that a SHTF scenario is a distinct possibility down the road. Accordingly, I bought a Bushmaster XM15 E2S .223 a while back. Having read a number of your articles and comments, my question is, should I upgrade to a .308? I have done a lot of looking and reading and come to the decision that if I buy, it would be a DPMS Panther .308 24" SS barrel with A3 upper and JP trigger. While the idea of getting into LR competitions intrigues me, my priority is to have a rifle with which to defend my family. Would appreciate any and all comments relating to my choise (DPMS) and whether it makes sense to "upgrade" to a .308 caliber. Thanks for taking the time to read all this.

Re: AR15 vs AR10

I would keep the ar15 for self defence. If you want a .308 for shooting get one, but the 24" barrel is to long for self defence, plus the .308 is a little more than you need. Plus the weight difference between the ar15 and the lr-308 is also a plus for keeping the ar15. I would get both, but it is up to you.

What they said.

There are many good choices. I have both 223 and 308 shtf rifles. 24 inches on the 308 is more than you need on a shtf rifle. The 308 can be either an M1A or AR-10. I figure the 308 is my static position defense rifle and the 223 is the backup or for another associate to use or for my roaming the country side rifle.

The 223 is much easier for a person to learn to shoot well. Plus 20 pounds of 223 ammo has more rounds than 20 pounds of 308 ammo. These are the basic reasons the 223 replaced the 308 as the primary rifle in our nation's service. But the 308 is definitely a more powerful round.

Then, you can get a 223 bolt lightweight rifle with detachable box magazines and a 308 bolt rifle with detachable box magazines. But the 223 AR-15 is a good starting point, using the SS-109 62 grain projectiles with the steel penetrator.

All of the above is IMO and FWIW and YMMV.

Re: AR15 vs AR10

There's a reason the entire US military abandoned the 308 for a 223 combat rifle ( as a personal defense weapon - obviosuly 308 has many excellent uses in combat)

Re: AR15 vs AR10

Shotguns rule the roost for personal protection (CQB/ in your house)....7.62 is overkill and potentially dangerous to the rest of your family members. 5.56 is a good round for personal defense with the right choice of ammo (frangible).

Re: AR15 vs AR10

The reasons to have an AR10 over an AR15 as I see them:
1. Firing from long distance - 500 yds plus
2. More desired stopping power - cover vs. concealment argument
3. You have a ton of 308 stockpiled
4. You want to be cool

For the record I have both....

Re: AR15 vs AR10

Panther I own the venerable DPMS SASS,and I can say with full confidence that with the Magpul, the JP,mang. iron sights and other amenities I have not been dissapointed with one aspect of the machine. HOWEVER you should consider all options before deciding. For my intended use the DPMS fits the bill to a tee.Again I would like to emphasise only you can decide what will be the best fit for your needs.Hope this helps, and would be happy to offer any technical help you may require.

As the stated use is home defense, this advantage is compeltely negated.

For SHTF scenario, stockpiled ammo is great (particualrly the amount you cannot take with you is great for supplying the enemy) , but .308 doesn't have the portability that 223 does.

"alive" is VERY cool.

Re: AR15 vs AR10

Keep the AR and if you have the funds add an AR10 or 308 semi auto platform. There are a lot to choose from. In your SHTF scenario you could use the 308 for hunting or long range targets.

SCPanther,

Before wasting your money on any rifle you need TRAINING!!!!!

Once you know how to handle a firearm correctly, you will know what to get.

BUT PLEASE seek out a solid quality Carbine course for that AR-15 you have now
