I have a few old coins I inherited from my father. He used to do some metal detecting. I have some very old pennies- from around 1900, 1909, etc. I also have some old silver coins- mostly quarters. The quarters are from arouind the 1920s and most are worn pretty bad. I can read the date, etc. but they are not near what i would call good condition.
I also have a silver dollar from 1880, I think. It is in very very good condition.
I need to get them out of the safe to make an inventory, but I am hoping someone on here might know about old coins and be able to answer questions. I know some of the variations can be valuable.
I am not looking to sell- al least not right now. I just want to get an idea what they are worth.
I also have several rolls of silver dimes, quarters and half dollars from 1964. I think they are just worth their melt value. Is there any reason to hold onto them other than for their silver content?

BTW, I have looked up the melt value on a website. Is that a price I could expect to get? Who buys coins for their silver melt value?
I am not in a burning hurry to sell them, but I would like to know the details in case I do.

I would look VERY CAREFULLY into their value. You can buy a coin book for starters, for a few bucks. The old silver dollars could be worth a BUNDLE...I think the Morgans are valuable. Get more than one appraisal. Try contacting Tigerbikes on theis forum. He has more knowledge than I

Re: Are there any coin collectors here?

I have looked through a few books and several online coin sites.
I swear that it's easier to help a noob pick a first scope than to figure coins out.
I only have a single silver dollar. What got me really curious is someone telling me that a certain penny, around 1900 or 1909, with certain marks is worth around $1k. If mine are only worth $20.00 I will just keep them. I want to know what I have though no matter what.

Somewhere I have a list of what I have and what my brother has.
There are a few coins we need to get valued. They are single coins we will share. One is a $5 gold piece. It's in a cardboard sleeve with a plastic window. I think there are a couple of pennies like that too. Those are what we think might be the more valuable coins since they were protected.
The old indian head pennies might only be worth a few dollars each, but it would be neat to know about them.

IIRC the 1909S VDB Lincoln cent is the most valueable. Bought two for my father in '78 @ a coin shop in Great Falls, MT on my way home for Christmas for him but cannot remember other date/mint, perhaps a 14D???.

1916D Mercury dime and I think 22D are the only 2 worth much. As stated the CC dollars fetch a premium because of such limited production. Condition, Condition, Condition

Don't recall any of the Indian Head pennies being worth much. Barber quarters are known to wear hard and the date seems the first to disappear.

Sold what silver I had first of Dec when it was just under $29oz. Dealer was paying 19x face. So a $1.90 for Roosevelt dimes I had. Unless a very rare yr/mint mark then anything currently with considerable wear is worth more as scrap is what the dealer told me then. I believe silver is now about the same as Dec 2 prices.

Have tried talking my 87yr old father into selling his stuff now but his comment is "when I die you kids can fight over it"! LOL Stubborn old chit, but I still love him

Re: Are there any coin collectors here?

There are Indian Head pennies worth some money. Dates & mint marks apply, obviously along with condition. 1914D penny, 1931S penny may be worth a few bucks also.

If the dates aren't readable then I agree, scrap. Use to Sit with my dad for hours and look through old pennies, thousands of them. I remember at one time he had $600 in pennies all rolled up stored in coffee cans. I miss those days. Today would have been his 77th birthday. Better go to the cemetery today for a visit.

Good luck with the coins.

That comment brought back an old memory from about 64. Dad had always been a 'silver dollar' fan. Bought a car in the early 50's with them, bought his 70 Yon Deere tractor in '54 with IIRC 1500 silver dollars. His last big purchase before they started to be worth more than $1 was in 59 when my Sis was born he bought her a $500 savings bond, don't know exactly how many silver dollars though. He still has alot of chit but would be neat to have all the silver dollars that touched his hands over the yrs. Used to play rummy(sp?) in a small bar during the winter months for money for as long as I can remember until he was about 70. He used to buy silver dollars from other players etc and come home sometimes with 15-20 in his pockets. Ahhhh, the good ole days!!!

Also remember when he started collecting Mercury dimes in about the above mentioned 64 time frame. My Uncle owned a coin operated only laundromat in town. He had just emptied all the washers and dryers. We went to his house one eve to look through at least 6 cutoff below the handle 1gal bleach bottles all full of dimes. The search was for the Mercuries, the all silver Roosevelts were just in the way.LOL

Re: Are there any coin collectors here?

When I was a boot camp instructor in Great Mistakes ('98-'01), on the drive home I use to stop at a mobile station. There was a lady use to come in & pay for her gas with crisp, clean, uncirculated 1934 $20 bills.

The Morgan dollars are my favorite. Picked up a Carson City one once for $10 at an antique store. Same store I picked up a 1931S penny in EF for 10 cents.

Bet you wish you had all those Roosevelt dimes back Whirlwind. I use to go to the bank & buy $25 boxes of pennies to look through.
