Arisaka ammo

My son just got a great find on a nice Arisaka which uses 7.7x58 ammo. Problem is we can't find anyone who sells this ammo. Does anyone know who might carry the ammo? We did find one box by Hornady locally at $42 a box of 20. But they are sold out and every site on the internet is sold out. Nice gun, but might not be such a good deal if we can't find ammo!

I use mrnambu on gunbroker.com. He loads them himself and pricing is reasonable. You can even send him back the brass to reload to keep the cost down.

The Arisaka's are really neat (and accurate) rifles.

I've had two. One that I bought in high school for $7. Yup... seven dollars. I sanded it and made it all shiny and traded it for a Model 94 deer rifle.

Second I got in a trade for a whole pile of guns recently and gave it to a 'Hide friend because he wanted one for his collection.

Highly collectible now, especially if the Crysanthamum (sp) is not ground off. And very fun to shoot. You will be surprised by the accuracy. I didn't know there was a good ammo source. I may have to find another one to keep.

Lots of info on surplus boards about reloading 7.7mm. I use .30-06 brass and trim to length prior to running into 7.7 die. I don't have the length handy, but if trimmed correctly...brass will be the right length when you pull it out.

Much simpler just run a new Win 8mm Mauser case into a 7.7 die and load. No trim needed and works perfectly. Have fun. 7mm Mauser works too but necks come out a little short for me.

Is it really a "sniper" Arisaka Type 99? Those are worth 5X more. I just received one from my late in law. It's A Nagoya Arsenal "cutback" Sniper one of 2300 produced. Rifle is all matching and most screws are still staked in place. Got some brass ordered from Grafs but there swamped and I'm waiting my turn so I formed some from Greek HXP. I annealed shoulder and necks then ran them in a Lee die then trimmed to length (2.265"). Have a few test loads with cast boolits loaded. Make sure you check the chamber size a condition, some were converted to 300 Savage, 30/06 or 7.65 Mauser cause ammo was not available. Check chamber for sabotage holes drilled into it, especially if rifle has had the stock removed. The action design is supper strong from what I hear, tested to 100,000 psi without failing. Late war (last ditch) rifles may have heat treat flaws. So hand loads may be your best option, working up to published or proven pressures. Or let someone else pull the trigger.

I reload 7.7Jap from .30-06. There is an overlap in base dimension in both cartridges, so make sure you sort brass to pick out the best brand.
Most of mine is run through a Type 99LMG (too expensive to buy for this weapon).
With annealing, I have some brass that has gone through 5 firings.

Yeah, it isn't a cheap rifle to shoot by any means. You won't be disappointed with mrnambu's ammo. Really good stuff, and makes me look like I actually know how to shoot.
