So I am new to the forum and looking for any other Arizona shooters out there. I have been patiently waiting for my new rifle to get here. It is a Savage 10FP .308WIN that I have a bi-pod, weaver base /rings as well as a Nikon 4.5-14 x 40mm Mil-dot scope waiting for it. I have always been a shotgun/hand gun person (I do have others just nothing fancy). I have never tried to shoot something over 100yrds as it wasn’t needed but being that this new rifle can do 500yrds without issue I looking to learn how to be able to shoot that far when I want to. I am pretty sure I could do it on my own by why make the mistakes other have when I can learn from them. So is there any other AZ (PHX) shooters around here that might be able to throw some pointers my way since we have a different type of environment?

Re: Arizona Newbie

Rio Salado Sportsman Club, welcome to AZ, the public range is great , if you shoot 3 F class matches at 500 yards you can access the private range which goes out to 550 yards.

Lots of good practice.

Phoenix Rod and Gun Club has a group of tactical shooters that practice drills that would also exercise a broad range of skills.Great guys, friendly and helpful.

Re: Arizona Newbie

Thanks I have contacted the Phoenix Rod and gun club since it looks like only the 100yrd range is public and the have a 500yrd range. Waiting to see if you can pay for range time or if it is a members only deal. A friend I think belongs to the Rio Salado one but where is that at as I always forget to ask him and I think he is a handgun only guy?

Re: Arizona Newbie

Both ranges are good, but different. Phoenix rod and gun is a private club during the week, which sometimes is nice, Rio has better facilities and more ranges, but they don't have a tactical type match, just high power and f-class.

Re: Arizona Newbie

As Scott said in the TPRC2010 thread, come on down to PRGC when we're having our monthly precision rifle match! If you've got a 100yd zero and ammo, we're more than happy to help you with the rest!
You're guaranteed to learn more in one ~50rd match than you would shooting 500rds sitting static at a bench!

Re: Arizona Newbie

Thanks for the input. The rifle got here yesterday and I pick it up tonight and have the scope bore sighted. Now it is time to get out and sight it in. Kicker is this weekend is booked solid, next weekend as well then the in-Laws and 4 other family members come in to town for a week (killing 2 weekends). I might have to slip out to the local BLM land walk off 100 yrds and start shooting I can wait that long

What is the sense in letting a fine weapon sit in a safe only looking pretty

I also posted in the “2010 TPRC” thread and see the welcome to come on down and meet the group but sadly as stated above booked this weekend. If you shoot as a group another time someone please let me know! Someone also told me there is a monthly meet at the Phx club with distance/tactical shooters any of you guys go to that?
