Armalite Forward Assist...big deal or a big deal?

Re: Armalite Forward Assist...big deal or a big deal?

To my knowledge...there is NO new vs. old design. The "New" version is the existence of the forward assist because the "Old" models were slick/smooth side WITHOUT the forward assist.

Only Armalite can answer the "why" question on the addition of the F/A to their AR-10 models. It is a largely an unnecessary and unused feature on .308 ARs IMHO, but for whatever reason...it is on the newer model AR-10s (last 2yrs roughly) and it seems to be here to stay for the time being. Is it needed...not really. Is it "superior" to the "Old" design which didn't have an F/A...not really. I certainly wouldn't be in any hurry to "upgrade" my older, non-F/A equipped AR-10s!

I heard it was required for their entry in the SASS contract. Afterwards, even though they didn't get the contract, they still had the forgings to make a FA upper so they put them to use.

From what I understand that is why FA was added to the AR-10.
10 bolts have so much mass FA is not really needed (IMO).

The only time you should need FA on a 10 is if you need to be really quiet when closing the bolt.
Like in a hunting stuation.were of you were to slam a round in the chamber the noise would spook game.
With the FA a guy hunting could ease the bolt forward with the CH then use the FA to lock the bolt in place.

Why not just be locked and loaded already? My AR10 upper is before they had the FA. I do plan on buying another. I know some treat the FA like a make-it-or-break-it option, as they either love the FA or love the flat side look. IMO, I don't care one way or the other. If it is there I will never use it but it will never be in the way and if it is not there than great.

Re: Armalite Forward Assist...big deal or a big deal?

I think it was Tales of the Gun were they said that the actual designed forward assist is the cut out in side of the bolt where the gas vents out, as well as where the ejector cover is actuated. Just a press of the thumb is all thats needed incase of a double feed or worse a case base ripped off and one jammed into the rear, the forward assist just makes it worse. That happened to me in basic (wasnt fun).

Re: Armalite Forward Assist...big deal or a big deal?

I have a ar-15 with a fa on it. I never use it, if for some reason i have a round that does not chamber it is getting ejected not forced in the chamber.
