This is definitely NVD territory. My goal was to use passive detection means. I used an M1A Scout, walnut stock (old school) with a Leupold custom fire dot 1.5-5x33 VR-X. Great day scope.
For an NVD I wanted a clip on to work 50m-200m out. The good folks at Armasight suggested a CO-MR GEN3. Worked great on moonlight, but iffy in starlight. I needed active IR.
I had an IR 850nm that came with the scope, but the Picatinny rail adapter was missing. I tried using it as a hand held. No go. The light was too dim. My buddy using a Streamlight Super Tac IR lit up the night.
Benchmark my Armasight to my buddies' Pulsar 550 & 750 used on top of a Remington AR-10. Both the 550 & 750 out performed the Armasight in active IR. The passive IR Armasight was much better clarity. Problem was that I could only use the scope on 1.5-2. Any higher magnification and my sight picture became too small to see well.
Contacted Steve Tulchinsky at Armasight to get the adapter that was missing from my kit. Steve also suggested I upgrade from the IR850 to the IR850W. This is suppose to be twice as bright. I will compare to the Streamlight & report back. Packed up the the IR850 for shipping today.
The Pulsars are definitely Hunter scopes from the get go. Light & clear, but look like you are watching TV instead of real life with the Leupold/Armasight. Using the Tactical NVD for Hunting is taking some tweaking. My rig is getting a bit nose heavy.
