Living in a rural area I am sometimes tasked with dispatching small critters(fox or smaller). Not something I like doing, but sometimes it's needed. I've been using a Bolt action .22 with Silencerco Sparrow and Gemtec subs for quite a while. It's very quiet and accurate, but if you don't get perfect shot placement, they will squirm, and I hate it. I've been thinking about switching to a .17 HMR or .17 WSM, but I'm curious what others are using. I ended up with a Franklin .17 WSM, but since I'm in California, the lower is problematic so I can't use it. Bolt guns in .17 WSM seem to be second or 3rd rate at best.
Thanks.

As a youth my 17hmr was the solution to the foxes fooling w the chicken shack. Since moving to the city as an adult a rarely get to shoot the 17 hmr.

The "crack" of the 17hmr is going to be there with or without the can, it's just fast.

FN PS90, lol, that's one of the guns I use, for coyotes.

Small stuff, PCP air rifles, the 25 cal Impact mostly.

5mmFBI, which is a 20-221 fireball wildcat. 32's at 3675 fps, it's not as loud as it sounds because of the low amount of powder.

I think a 22 WMR would be good. I like the heavier bullet for hunting. You can use polymer tipped, hollow point or regular. Less sensitive to the wind and more versitle in my opinion. Also ammo is cheaper in my neck of the woods then 17 HMR

I like the 2 WMR, but my varmint gun is a Henry .17HMR. Shots aren't normally more than 25 yards for me, so it works well for me.

I just bought an old Glenfield 25 that might take up that duty when my suppressor gets out of ATF jail. If it's decently accurate, I may have the barrel cut down and threaded to make it a cheap little truck/property gun that won't keep the neighbors up at night when the raccoons are at the chicken coop.
