Hello everyone this is long overdue I have been so busy with everything some days I don’t know what direction I am going.
As most of you know Cor-Bon is doing all the ammo for the ASC issue match with FN rifles.
FN was nice enough to send me a rifle to do some load development with for the match. The day I received the rifle from FN I got started on it and got some very interesting results that I wanted to pass on to all of you in hopes to help you all out in the match.
The rifle that was sent to me was FN’s factory/custom 20inch 308 win that I think is call there A5 model.
I wanted to make a load that would shoot very well out of every ones rifle and use a powder that was sable in all weather conditions knowing how the weather can be up on the mountain. After some thinking and talking to a few people I decided to go with Hodgdon’s BLC-2. With having done a ton of testing with this powder in .308 Win I knew this would be a great choice for this project plus it drops to the tenth out of my powder measurers.
Next thing was bullet choice. I gave Rod Hanson a call and got his opinion on what he thought would be an all-around bullet to use on the mountain. We both quickly agreed that we would go with OLD RELIABLE the Sierra .30cal-175MK. This bullet is a great choice for all around bug hole-en. It has proven itself time and time again not only on the mountain but most likely wining the majority of tactical matches in the world and with the FN rifles being a 1in12 twist I think we couldn’t have made a better choice.
On the brass and primer I decided to go with Winchester’s factory primed brass primed with WLR’s. Winchester brass and primers have always been of great quality and would be a great choice for anyone’s loadings. Some of you guys might ask why we are not using my factory Lapua brass for this project and simply it comes down to $$$. With rod ordering 15K of .308 ammo for the match the coast in brass alone would be flat crazy. I think everyone will be very happy with the way the ammo turn out.
After doing a quick inspection of the rifle I loading up the first six for sight-in and fowling of the barrel. After the first two shots I was sighted in at 100yrds so I desisted to shoot the remaining four shot as a group. To my surprise the first group out of the rifle measuring outside to outside minus .308 was 0.242.
With the velocity being fairly slow I decided to load up five more and give her another half of a grain.
This group of five measured a mere .213 but the velocity was still about fifty slow from where I wanted to be. I gave her yet another half of a grain and shot five more. This time the velocity was 2517fps with an ES of 7 and the group was an unbelievable 0.013 that’s right it measured 0.013! I didn’t make a typo.
After shooting this group I decided to give her another half since every time I added more powder the group got smaller. Not that I expected to shot a better group than the last one but I thought I might get a few more FPS. This group didn’t shoot as well with the ES claiming to 38. So I went back to the previous load and shot another 60 rounds or so doing some temperature testing and more accuracy testing. Below is some of the data I got. If anyone has any question on this load please feel free to contact me. Also I normally don’t give out any of my load data but since this is a special load for this match I have decided to supply as much data as I can to help you all in the match.
