i was set on a standard 223 rem build on a 700 action but now im wondering if i should go up to a 6mm. Cant decide what i want. Im looking for a budget build just to shoot for fun and try to push wayyyy to far. Im not in competition nor will i ever be. Shooting in Wyoming. I just like to reload and figure up loads on my own. Now Im thinking I should look into a 6mm but I know I need/want for sure these things for my build... (1) brass availability (2) short COAL so i can seat 90g- 115g vlds and still fit a 308 mag. (3) A NON barrel burning round. I DO NOT want to have to fireform brass! Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

If you don't want a barrel burner your 6mm chamberings may not be your choice. There are the 6.5mm selections.
Be different get a long barrelled 6.5 grendel, long barrelled 7-08 or the old standard 308w.

If you want to shoot waaaayyyyy far 223 wont be optimal.
223 will be much better with heavy long rounds probably beyond mag length.

6mm can get you out there in certain calibers but not as common or easy in some cases. And depending on caliber can be a barrel burner.

6.5 calibers start to do well... a 260 with prime ammo will get you out there and let you push it a little more than a creed.

And lastly what's waaaayyyy out there and what's the criteria for accuracy?

Thanks guys and please lets not turn this into a caliber debate of whats better. i just want a few good suggestions. Also 1moaff i did not say i wanna push it wayyyyy out there. I said push it wayyy to far. Like a 223 shooting 90SMKs further than i can accurately shoot and hitting every so often. Im a realistic guy. I do not expect to build something under $1000 and shoot half minute out to 1500m.

i would like low recoil and nice little clover hole groups and i like trying to hit stuff from 100m to 1000m. where i can still see the impact. rifle weight also does not matter.

what do you guys think of a 6xc? 243 win?

I thought you wanted a non barrel burning round.

Depending on what that specifically means to you, many consider the .243 as having relatively low barrel life. Again, this depends on what "barrel burner" means to each and everyone INDIVIDUALLY, as opinions can vary a lot.

I say you build a valkyrie. It's got heavy for caliber factory loaded ammo already so there's that, decent barrel life, and of course, ammo is or can be loaded to mag length. That is actually the purpose the V was built for. A 223 loaded with big heavy bullets in order to have any serious potential at longer ranges means it has to be loaded long that you may end up single feeding. The Valkyrie fixes that.

Good luck!

Sorry I misread.

As others have said the 224v would do all of the above. You can also purchase ammo if you ever wanted to.

Next step up might be 6br. Cant really buy ammo, limited magazine options.

6gt is new, soooo ???

6.5 creed fills all the boxes.

Honestly a 308 can be loaded up or down according to need.

Really you kinda need to narrow it down for us and give some more specifics on what you want and expectations.

For example I run an odd caliber choice to most but I have my own reasons.... 6 comp match, and i love it!
