Fellow hide members I need some assistance with selecting a quality AR-10 type rifle.
I am looking at the GAP AR-10 and the Iron Ridge Arms IRA-X but have not had any experience with either.
I am looking for recommendations and opinions from anyone who has been fortunate enough to shoot either of these riffles.
If anyone has a suggestion for another manufacturer I should consider please feel free to suggest it.
I appreciate your assistance with this,
Evan

Re: Assistance Requested

Try running a search and you should find plenty of good info to get you started...there are a sh!tload of reviews of GAP, APA, IRA, POF, LWRC, DPMS, etc., etc. rifles available. Also, I have never seen an IRA factory-built rifle...only rifles that smiths or individual customers have built up using IRA receivers.

Before you get too far into your search, decide:

1) Do you want a Piston or DI setup?

2) Do you want an Armalite/AR-10 or DPMS/KAC compatible rifle/lower?

Here is a link to the SH Google Search Engine:

ORD thanks for your response. I did run a search prior to posting using the SH search but didn't find what I was looking for.
Thank you very much for the SH Google search engine link. That is a much more robust search tool, which I will use going forward.

I have prety much decided on the GAP AR-10, and am on the waitlist, but I was looking for feedback on Iron Ridge Arms model. I did overlook APA in my original post but I am looking at their AR-10 offering as well. I will give them a call today and inquire about availability.

Regarding your two points:
1) I have not had any experience with piston, just DI and probably will stick with DI. I am open to exploring a piston driven upper, and have been actively reading and watching the evolution of this technology with regards to AR uppers but I am not sold on switching yet.
2) I will stick with a DPMS/KAC compatible lower.

Respectfully yours,
Evan

Re: Assistance Requested

I was thinking this thread may have been from a Nigerian prince asking to get some money from a London bank! Kidding...

A GAP AR-10 is a going to be a sweet rig. What you need to be thinking about is what you're going to do with the weapon? Do you want a gun to take to the range and punch paper? Are you looking for something to use in competitions? Do you want a 1k rifle? Are you looking for a handy rifle that you can use in both CQB situation and a mid-range targets?

The only caution I'd give you is that I wouldn't get an AR-10 with a barrel longer than 20". The little added velocity you get from the added barrel length isn't worth what you give up in mobility and balance, IMO. My ideal 308 gas gun is a 16". With one optic, you've got an 800 yard steel banger, with another optic, you're standing in the stack ready to bust through some doors.
