I have seen this asked a bunch lately so I did some research. This info applies to "firearms" which includes silencers and is directed to the manufacturer (<span style="font-weight: bold">you</span> on an ATF Form 1). The Form 1 is somewhat vague in this area so here we go. All the following info comes from the current NFA rulebook as posted by BATFE. It was taken from Chapter 7, 7.4.1.1 and Title 27 CFR, part 479, 479.102
Information must be engraved, cast or stamped.
Information must be clearly visible
Information must be (min.) .003" deep and no less than 1/16" tall
Information required:
1)serial # (may have letters, but must include at least one number)
2)your name or recognized abbreviation of your name
3)caliber or guage
4)city and state where manufacturer resides or conducts business.
On a side note, ATF recognizes the tube of a silencer as the "main" component and "recommends" placing all this information there.
Hope this helps some of you
Here is the link where you can download the handbook. It is very easy to find info using the index, also has a lot of frequently asked questions. Some answers have to be found in several different areas so look and read closely.
