It's not even like banning knives over a certain length. Machetes are mild steel. Any piece of low-carbon steel and a grinder can make a machete.Just to let everyone know know some points about this.
1: it was already illegal for the 2 drop-kicks to possess a machete.
2: it was already illegal to possess machetes in a public place
3: it was already illegal to disturb the peace with machetes in a public place
4: it was already illegal fight in a public space.
They (from what I read / heard) are 15 and 16yo import scumbags. They have been denied bail, and i fully expect there to be more than 4 charges each.
All that will happen is that people who need them for work (hortacultralists, lawn care people, tree-fellers, farmers and such) will have to probably file paperwork to own and use them now. This "new" law is ONLY going to hurt people who were using them legally. It will do NOTHING to hurt or deter criminals.
Everyone who correctly pointed out that they can be made in under 1hr in your back shed are on the money. The law doesn't do shit and 'straya at large was lost years ago.
Banning the sale of them will do nothing.
