auto range finding scope.........

Re: auto range finding scope.........

I bought the Hi-Lux CMR 1-4X, and will never buy another Hi-Lux scope.

Turrets are stiff, and don't repeat well.

Glass is OK, with some ghosting evident - mostly clear and bright.

The reticle is nice, but very thin, and the illumination is absent in sunlight, even on the Spinal Tap setting of '11'. This make it useless in the 'red-dot' role.

Worst of all, the turret o-rings shredded the first time I took the caps off to adjust the zero.

The A.R.T. is an outdated system. And on a Hi-Lux, I doubt it would even work properly.

Maybe I had a bad scope, but it soured me on the brand completely.

Re: auto range finding scope.........

I used the ART Leatherwood on a M21, I thought it worked quite well. Never had problems loosing my zero even taking the scope off and putting it back on.

Don't know about the new ones.

Do you feel it was really an improvement over "traditional" elevation knobs?

It seems kinda ridicules to me that he kept moving the knob back and forth from 300-500-300 and such - seems to me that you could just as easily do that with mil clicks but idk - just seemed silly to me

but ive never seen one IRL so what the heck can i say about it really

Re: auto range finding scope.........

My USO Sn-4 I had in A-Stan with the Circle Chevron had an auto range reticel in it. The width of each range line was 18"/shoulder width. Put the line that matches, bang. Since it got beat up really good(It was Soldier proof, Marine proof, but not quite Switchblade proof), I had it replaced with a JPJ1 reticle for the M855. Cool, auto ranging reticle. Each range line is, yup, 18"/shoulder width, line it up, bang. Best part about both those SN-4's? Nothing to rotate or do except zero it, then look through it at 4x

Actually ranging with a ART is faster then Mil Dots. No math in volved. Using the power ring is no slower then the elev. knob.

Then of course we didn't have Mil Dot scopes, At the time, without the ART such as with M1C/D's I taught using the front sight or thickness of the redical to estimate range. They work the same way as the Mil Dot.

I'm out of the game now except for teaching LE sniper/counter snipers, different ball game.

Re: auto range finding scope.........

Good thread and have ask before and wondered how the older school precision shooters ranged the targets in a hasty enviroment.Or just in practice on a range of ukd.
