I'm hearing people running their auto tricklers on grounded anti static mats to help with drift. How does that work exactly since the feet are plastic? If there's no real connection to the machine, how's it grounding it, and how's it dealing with the static?

Your question is valid. Figure out where there's a ground point on the scale and run a copper conductor from there down to the anti static mat. Make sure the conductor is bare for say 6 inches or so and simply tuck it under the mat. Boom, done.
