Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

this is yhe absolute truth as a physician i teach if God made it and God packaged it is safe to eat. only exception is if God made it and man froze it to store. all others add risk of metabolic syndrome obesit and death!

9H: chemicals ending in "...ose" are sugars. That includes fructose, sucrose, sucrolose, lactose, glucose,

Sugar is a simple carbohydrate. There are two types of sugars - monosaccharides, which include glucose, fructose and galactose, are made of one sugar molecule, and disaccharides are made of two sugar molecules linked together. Disaccharides are formed when monosaccharides combine - for example, when glucose and fructose are combined, they form sucrose, also known as table sugar. Other disaccharides include maltose, dextrose and lactose. When many sugar molecules are linked together, they form a complex carbohydrate, also known as a starch. _Life Clinic.

There are lots we can learn from this.

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

The Pepsi I was drinking as I started watching this got a whole lot less tasty by 10 minutes in. I don't see myself having pop much anymore.

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

bcw, not trying to plow new ground. I found it somewhere. You're reminder jogs my memory that it was here that I saw that first. Its still good. Hate to break it to ya, but maybe someone missed it before?

STILL - not the point of his lecture.

High Fructose Corn Syrup has 3 main things wrong with it. One, it does not send a signal to the brain that you consumed a calorie. Two, it is metabolized as a toxin in the body and affects the liver like alcohol. And three, a point not covered in the video, it takes 10 calories of energy to put one calorie of food based on HFCS on the shelf in the grocery store.

Not all "...ose"s are the same.

Sucralose is not a sugar. It is an artificial sweetener with no calories made by chlorinating sucrose.

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

i am too hyper on pepsi to watch over a hour of a guy who probrably lives in his moms basement telling me what is bad for me my opinion is if i like it then i am happy and being happy is good for me

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

Lol, Lustig is not a guy who lives in his mother's basement. He is one of the most predominant child obesity researchers in the world. There are some of his colleagues who disagree with some of his conclusions, and they also make a good point... but if you get down to the meat of the matter, it's really yet another exercise in moderation.

1shot, go ahead and have a Pepsi, it won't kill you. Just don't have gallons of it every day.

I watched "Supersize Me" again the other day, and while I understand there is a great deal of liberal slant there, one particular thing stood out to me. The scene where Morgan is interviewing the gastric bypass patient, and the patient tells him about his soda consumption. Then his fat wife gets up and joins the conversation with her own insane soda consumption tales. While I understand he may ALSO overeat and gastric may help him, I thought it made quite a stunning example of "drinking yourself fat".

If you have a soda, TREAT it like a TREAT... not like a replacement for water.

BTW- Kroger is carrying Stevia-sweetened sodas now

Also, watch out for the diet drinks... aspartame has it's own demons.

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

The main reason that Americans have been force-fed corn-syrup over the past half-century is the sugar tariffs and quotas imposed by the USDA. These were sold to the people under the guise of protecting domestic sugar production, but in reality they are to protect the interests of the American corn-lobby. Preventing importation of plentiful and inexpensive cane and beet sugar forces any American-produced product to use corn syrup instead of other sugars.

But I guess something has to be done with all the corn we subsidize with our tax dollars......

BULLSHIT.

Corn syrup in normative quantities, high fructose or otherwise, is not a toxin nor is it 'metabolized' like one. Neither is ethyl alcohol appropriate for human consumption a toxin in normative quantities: indeed it is actually used to treat poisoning by other genuinely poisonous alcohols and organic compounds, in particular methanol and ethylene glycol.

Stop posting this nonsense.

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

bronzepig just because God made it doesn't mean its safe to eat. Common sense aside haha not so common sense about poisonous plants. I remember a study some years ago where they followed a herd of wild horses, and monitored their health. They tested for infections, parasites, and whole mess of other goodies that I don't remember.
When they found tape worm inside their intestions they didn't treat to elevate the parasitic infection. Further monitoring found that the infection didn't worsen over time! It actually elevated on its own. What was happening was when the horse contracted the parasite they ate small amounts of poisonous plants to kill the parasite. Pretty neat and not something you learn everyday!

tullius not trying to discredit you but his presentation was based on the excessive amount of consumption of fructos. Not normative. He even said (true or not) that the avarage American consumes 130lbs of this stuff annually. Add this on top the fact that manufacturers remove essential dietary fibers so as to make it more preservative freindly, and you got a problem.
He even gives an example himself where the marathon runner can actually benifit from consumming fructos after the race. Thus replenishing lossed sugars burned by the liver during extreme and prolonged physical activity.
But seeing that Americans live a largely seditary lifestyle this is unlikely in most cases

It is also my impression that he was making a comparison to alcohol consumption as in to many beers. Filtering of both fructos and alcohol is handled by the liver, and LARGE amounts of either is toxic. Fructos unlike glucos isn't used by other organs. Coupled with that fructos is resistant to insilin and the fact you don't know when you have enough and you get a problem.
Those are my initial impressions anyway on the material presented anyway. Most of it was filled with medical jargle that was hard for my simple mind to understand

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

Wow. As someone who was recently diagnosed with diabetes mellitus-(type2), this hits close to home. I have so drastically changed my diet in the last 3 weeks that I have felt I would fall over from starvation. I may try the paleo diet when I get home.

Re: Avoid sugar; watch this scientific presentation

diabetes sucks, type one for 35 years, you learn to eat lean meat, no fried foods, and no starchy foods, basically it taste good don't eat it.

Before you go jumping to conclusions realize that A LOT of "allied health practitioners" consider themselves "physicians." There are many "physicians" who have no privilege to hold a bone fide MEDICAL LICENSE; ie chiropractors, naturopathic "physicians", homeopaths, etc. One of my EX-close friends from college became a chiropractor, he told me how he attended a weekend seminar in "Liver Detoxification" and subsequently felt as though he now had the qualifications to recommend that his Diabetic patients cease their medications...many probably prescribed by a board certified endocrinologist (4y med school, 3y internal medicine residency, 2-3y of endocrinology fellowship)...because his weekend course at the Holiday Inn was so "thorough." I know for certain in a quaint northern Ohio community there is a quack who exchanges dollar bills for unsound, unsafe, inappropriate "medical advice" to a community of very trusting "faith" driven individuals. His "religious" affiliations provide him with plenty of people willing to believe. We no longer speak.

Just so you know, not all "PHYSICIANS" attended a medical school...
