So I just acquired this Savage B17 HVSS with a Vortex 2x7 scope. Maiden range trip didn’t produce what I was hoping for after reading all the rave accuracy results people have with .17hmr. Pics below of the best 35 yard groups form the 3 Ammo’s that I tried. I plan on trying a few more different loads next trip out. I also mounted a Nikon 3x9x40 on it to help really zero in. Is there anything else I may be able to do in helping the accuracy as far as the rifle is concerned? The rifle was new and now has 75 rounds through it.

Lol, I knew that would probably be coming! Minus changing the stock, I would like to see some improvement before dumping cash into it. If at all possible.

Any suggestions on what to shim it with? Shim on sides, or bottom?

Sorry if it’s a stupid question, but I have never shimmed a barrel.

For test shims I use thin pieces of cardboard.
Add layer by layer until barrel no longer moves relative to forestock.
Both sides of barrel and underneath.
Old business cards or empty ammo boxes work well.
I don't believe free floated is a rule.
It's only a suggestion that may or may not provide the best results.

Probably also best to use a scope with parallax adjustment down to 35 yards if that's how close you'll be shooting. Just to eliminate that as a factor!
I was at 35 yards to just get started but ended up staying there. But after looking at some ballistics charts, I may zero at 35 yards. Looks like a good range for shooting anywhere from 20-125 yards with not much adjustment.

I finally gave up on my factory stocks.
Built a barrel block rig.
Receiver is free floated but barrel is epoxy bedded full length.
Then clamped in place with steel plates and leather pads.
No flex at all.
The most accurate rimfire I own.

I was allowed to test a Savage heavy barrel bmag 17 wsm.
It was a Tupperware stock also.
Threw fliers well outside the limits of the MV spread.
Built a barrel block rig for it and the results are in the 6x5 thread.
Way better than the factory plastic.
Ugly but accurate.

I bought the B22 a few months back. I pulled the stock off and removed the inner plastic channel thats screwed inside the stock. Barrel is free floated now. I have a Vortex Crossfire Tactical on it. Little bastard shoots 1/2” at 50 yards and i have no problems hitting my steel plate at 180 yards. Last week i shot a 3/4” at 116 yards!! All this with CCI standard velocity ammo. Future upgrades include a Boyds tacticool and an EGW 20 moa scope base. It just shoots so well i havent found the need to mess with anything yet except maybe the scope base. I have to use hold overs at 180 yards.

On my B22 I had EGW custom mill the base to 40 MOA (for a small fee) and used Burris XTR Signature medium height rings to let me bottom out the scope. I now have 64 (of the 65 MOA possible on the scope) that I can dial out. With holdover it's possible to hit 500 yards.

Sounds like a good shooter now. What kind of groups did it do before removing the tray?
Dont think i even shot it before removing it. Noticed it wasnt floated so when i pulled it apart to adjust the trigger and check scope base screws...i pulled that shit out instantly. Havent noticed any ill effects from it. I dont really get any fliers anymore.

I think im going to go with the DIP scope base actually. Its 25 moa and only $39. Get me out to 280 yards i think. Further then my personal range will ever get

So I made a few modifications to the B17 and had a few other types of ammo delivered. I picked up some Hornady 20gr hp, CCI TNT 17gr hp, and some CCI A17. I removed the barrel channel to help insure the barrel is free floating. I also painted the stock camo, I hear that’s good for lowering group size too!

Shot my best 35 yard and 100 yard groups today. The 35 was with the Hornady 20gr and the 100 with the TNT. I also shot 2 groups with some previous Ammo I tried to see if the barrel channel removal helped, it seemed to, but is also made the flimsy stock even more flimsy, figured that would happen. Trying to have another hide memeber create an aluminum one for me.

Getting more and more happy with the B17 and can’t wait to see how it does once I get the improved barrel channel. I think a little more glass would help too. The 3x9 was an improvement over the 2x7, but would like a little more.

I'd give it 250-500 rounds to smooth the factory rough bore out. JB bore cleaner and the polish used per instructions couldn't hurt either.

Also inspect the muzzle crown with a magnifying glass. My stainless heavy barrel Savage .17HMR had a properly finished crown, my .17WSM Bmag was unfinished with burrs.

If you do get a Boyds stock plan on spending a fair amount of time making the action and barrel fit, they are not plug and play by any means.

I thought I did notice a small imperfection in the crown. I will have to look at it closer. What do you do if there is?

The proper way is have a gunsmith put it in a lathe and put an 11* crown on it. But considering the platform it's hard to justify the expense.

This was my Bmag muzzle, it would stop a fingernail and snag a patch or tear a paper towel.

I used a brass polishing mandrel from Brownell's with valve grinding compound initially and then 600 grit finishing compound to get it to this stage.

This is a 50yd test after bedding the action in Boyds Pro Varmint stock, I've since redone the bedding hoping for improvement.

I cut this bedding out because it was a couple millimeters too tall.

Nice work. Mine looks pretty good now that I looked at it through a microscope.

I am having a hide member manufacture a metal barrel channel for mine, hopefully that will stiffen the plastic stock up enough. I am shooting it with the plastic channel removed now and results are decent. The barrel is totally free floated this way but very flimsy. Hoping to shoot it today some more. I will try off of bags to take the stock out of play as much as possible. Do you free recoil when you shoot yours?

Made it back out today. Best groups were with CCI TNT and CCI a17. I think I can go ahead and just order a bunch of the TNT. Funny as i shot better from 100 yards than I did from 35, according to the Ballistic-X app.

I shoot my varmint guns off the bag I use hunting, though I don't always use a rear bag when shooting sage rats.

This is the primary environment the gun was purchased for. :)

Regarding .17HMR ammo, I typically shoot Hornady 17 Vmax, though I've had good luck with the CCI TNT and A17, the TNT being more accurate and it has a nice audible pop similar to a .22 magnum. (y)

That rig you have set up is pretty cool. I shot off rolled up towel in from and a bag in back today and then went to bipod and rear bag. Better groups came from the bipod.
