Im prolly gonna open a can of worms, and im sure its been on here befor. Im new to this forum stuff, and not very computer smart, so bear with me. Im gonna do a ladder test on a new 300wm. Its a 700 heavey barrel in a mcrees stock. wat should i use to do my test, sand bags, front rest and rear bag, bipod and rear bag, or a sled/vice sorta thing??? i do want to eliminate as much human error as possible, but dont wanna hold the gun back from moving as it naturally should. Ideas, suggestions??

Re: bags, vice, or bipod

Unless you're an experienced shooter, and I don’t think you are, front rest and rear bag is going to be the easiest for you at first but, try to transition to a bipod, rear bag and prone as soon as you can.

Skip the lead sled/vice gimmick. It breads bad habits.

Re: bags, vice, or bipod

I agree with Wnroscoe.

Bags and bipods (with rear bag) will both allow you to see the accuracy potential of the rifle. Bags will be easier to get started on.

Most people on this forum can agree that sleds suck for precision rifle shooting.

Re: bags, vice, or bipod

I test and practice at the range like I am going to hunt, as close as I can.

That is a bi pod on the bench and a tiny rear bag hanging from the sling on the big game rifles.

That is big bag in front and wedge bag in the rear on the bench, like will be on the Varmint Master bench when I shoot rodents.

Sometimes I shoot with a barbed wire fence as a rest, shooting at game. I am not practicing for that. It scratches up the rife.
