Gunsmithing Barrel and Action finish

I just had my first custom build completed. The work that the smith did was good. Excellent bedding job, etc, etc. Haven't shot the gun yet, so I can't speak to performance. However, the stainless steel barrel that I took the smith did not have a mark on it when I dropped it off. When I picked it up, I noticed that there were marks on the barrel where it looked as if it had been brushed up against other pieces of metal and even one spot that looks tarnished. I have even noticed a couple of relatively small spots on the action, and this was a NIB Rem 700 action that he used for the build. My question is if it is normal to see these kind of marks upon completion of a build from the machining process, or if this was just poor handling of my components by the smith. I just can't figure the marks on the barrel as there has no machining to do to it, just installing it in the action.

I'd say not normal on a custom rifle build!! Call the builder direct & give him a chance to make it right for you.

working on a barrel/action that is not going to be blasted or have a finish applied to it is kind of a pain in the ass. the action not so much but putting a 27"+ long barrel though the lathe headstock without it touching anything on the way can be difficult. if i know it is not going to be blasted or finished, i'll wrap it in masking tape and make my best attempt of keeping it mark free. the action you just need to be a bit careful with and not be banging it around.

i would think (hope) anyone accepting money for their services would take the same precautions on a customers parts.

this part i don't understand. if it was an aftermarket barrel installed, i am sure it spent some time in the lathe.

Pictures would help a ton to evaluate if there was unnecessary damage, or if it is something along the lines of marks from a chuck or something of that nature. Was the barrel a take-off from another gun, or a blank? Does the 'tarnish' area clean off with a cleaner?
