What do you guys normally do after fitting a new barrel,would you step back from the rifle and use a piece of string or something to pull the first shot or would you do like Ive been doing,take the shot with all hands on deck. A few people reckon Im crazy for doing this but I never felt the need to not trust my work. Maybe I am crazy. What do you guys say.

Just man-up and pull the trigger. If the rifle will chamber and eject the round and everything looks good then go for it.

I have to agree. If you have dotted all the i-s and crossed all the t-s, you should be good to go. I have changed barrels on my own rifles probably a couple of dozen times. Fit some brass to the chamber and take it to the range with a medium charge load. Have fun.

After barreling an action, (as a barreled action) I put both hands on the barrel and have somebody pull the trigger and shoot into my back stop. I fire 3 rounds, measure case expansion (usually nothing) and get on with it. Its kind of freaky the first time, but you have to be confident with your work!!!

i hire a bum i found behind the dumpster at chevron to do all my test firing. he works cheap, all he asks for is a 40 oz of steel reserve. because i kind of felt bad, i gave him two 40's the time he lost his eye and got that massive laceration across his face.
but seriously, i remember firing the first round after my first attempt at rebarreling a rifle. i was confident i did everything correctly but there of course was some doubt lingering in the back of my head. headspace was good, ammo would load and eject properly so i gave it a go. give it a go, just don't hold me liable if it goes bad

The first one I built I had butterflies all the way to the range. Got there, set up, and took my balls out of my wife's purse and let her rip. All is history now. SPM

Oh no. I didn't know I was supposed to be nervous about the test fire. After I tightened it up and ran some rounds in and out to make sure extraction and feed were Ok I went out back and shot 3 in the berm. With the silencer. I suppose in retrospect I should have left the silencer off until I saw round holes. But I was fairly confident it was not going to blow up.

that's funny.... and honest.
I switched barrels on a 700. I lapped the headspace in and used a set of .308 headspace gauges. When it was where I wanted, I went to the range and it shot like a charm. On the first shot, I kept my big head turned away from the the receiver. After that, I checked the fired case and it was gtg. I have let her run ever since and no problems, even with max+ loads.
