Wondering what length the majority of people like the barrel. For paper punching only @ 600 yards max with a .308 and Black Hills 168 Gr. Hornady A-MAX.

How about 28 or 30" options (or over 28" option). What caliber and what bullet(s)? This info would help to figure it out.

To many variables.
Bullet weight, powder type or commercial load?
If you just want us to make a choice for you, go with the 20".

If it is just for paper punching, go 36" and impress your friends!
Seriously, a 20" barrel in a 308 is not much of a handicap.

20" is fine for 600 yards, but it will be a handicap should you ever decide to go out to 1000. 24" would be the better all around choice unless you have an overall length requirement.

not so sure i buy this, i shoot just fine out to 1K with a 19 inch barrel. I dont feel handicapped at all, granted you do lose some velocity, but handicapped isnt the case at all

He mentioned Black Hills 168 grain Amax. Spent some time at 1000 with them this past summer and guys with anything less than 22" using that bullet were keyholing. Not sure what their recipe was but I just didn't want the OP to regret the shorter barrel.

If your match bullets wont make it to 1K outta a 20" barrel, you need different boolits.

+1...I've run to a grand several times with my 19 inch barrel 308 w/ 175's...not much of an issue to be honest.

not trying to downplay your experience but more than likely it was the bullet that was going transonic and starting to tumble thus the keyholing. Bu to the OP anywhere from 18-26 will suit you just fine, its all a personal preference:
First you need to decide if you want a handy,lighter,well balanced rifle or do you want a little bit heavier,less handy, and less balanced rifle.
22 and under= Handy,lightER, more balanced,loss of velocity
22 and up= Less handy, Heavier, less balanced,more velocity
and by balanced im talking about how well the rifle points from other positions than the prone. Sorry its a little long winded post. But if you go 22 and under you can always get a Tightbored barrel to regain some of the speed you are losing by chopping the barrel

Plenty of guys are banging steel out of a bone stock 20" LTR with factory ammo at a grand...

I got to shoot a 20" Savage 10FP not too long ago. The 10FP that I had was a 24" barrel. I was surprised how much difference it makes in the handling of the rifle. In fact, there was so much of a difference, my next Savage will be sportin a 20"er!!
