not trying to downplay your experience but more than likely it was the bullet that was going transonic and starting to tumble thus the keyholing. Bu to the OP anywhere from 18-26 will suit you just fine, its all a personal preference:
First you need to decide if you want a handy,lighter,well balanced rifle or do you want a little bit heavier,less handy, and less balanced rifle.
22 and under= Handy,lightER, more balanced,loss of velocity
22 and up= Less handy, Heavier, less balanced,more velocity
and by balanced im talking about how well the rifle points from other positions than the prone. Sorry its a little long winded post. But if you go 22 and under you can always get a Tightbored barrel to regain some of the speed you are losing by chopping the barrel
