What is the general life expectancy on a rimfire? I'm going to be getting the new Savage TR, but I still can't decide between the .22 or the .17. If I wind up with the .22 I know I'll be shooting the shit out of it. At least 100 rounds each trip to the range. If I get the .17, maybe not as much.

Far more than you can shoot in a lifetime. I have a friend that shot on the All Guard Pistol Team. He told me that his rifle shooting friends were getting aout 100,000 rounds out of an Anschutz barrel.
The biggest enemy to 22 rimfire barrels is improper cleaning. Always clean from the breach end and use a rod guide.

+1 on the cleaning. A well known rimfire Smith(Calfee)said that out of five benchrest rifles sent into him for new barrels four were ruined by improper cleaning. He said: get a quality one piece stainless steel rod (IVY). No coated or aluminum rods. A good bore guide designed for your rifle. Brass brush with brass center. On my Broughten barrel I use three wet patches(Montana extreme rimfire blend) and one dry. No brush unless I find some stubborn fouling. Regards

If you can resist over cleaning it. It should last around million rounds (22lr)... Have no experience with the .17's.

I've got my Dads 22 Harrington and Richardson bolt action. I has been in continuous use since 1953! Thousands upon thousands of rounds. If you don't fuck it up with a cleaning rod-who knows.

22LR, if you wear out a barrel, please tell me, I need to hear about miracles now and then. 17, I'm not so sure, but for me the problem with the chambering isn't bore life, it's why anyone would want to complicate a nice simple chambering by combining it with jacketed bullet technology. Cleaning a .22lr is a coupla times a lifetime thing, but jacketed bullets ain't so uncomplicated.

I really think my 22lr toz barrel life has come to an end. I have shot around 20000 in last 2 year alone and i have had this rifle for 5 year. This rifle was made 1965 or something like that (cant remember).I can see some minor marks of barrel wearing of. But this rifle has been in hard use!
At least my Toz doesnt like SK subsonics no more. i Might try some eley/lapua ammo. It just to be a lazer whit SK subsonics.

I read somewhere that Eley sells the barrels they use for their test guns at between 150,000 and 500,000 rounds (a wide range). These barrels still shoot, mind you, but not the Eley's exacting standards. I can't seem to find that article, but I will post if I can find it. It might even be a post from someone who has visited the factory.
I don't think 1,000,000 rounds is out of the question. I used to worry about getting the barrel hot, but I have found that because I have a single shot, if I am shooting solid from "cease fire" to "cease fire," I can't put enough rounds down the tube to heat the barrel up significantly. For people who shoot 10/22's as fast as they will go, I can see wear being a problem... especially for those who are shooting supersonics.
