Alright, I need some schooling on the different types of barrel materials out there, and their pros/cons. I am looking to buy an AR 15 DMR/type rifle, but I favor reliability and durability over any small gains in accuracy. This would be for a 5.56 that might be shot in adverse conditions.

Go with a quality stainless steel barrel. Button rifled is fine when you're on a budget, but cut rifled is better if you want to go all out. The accuracy gains are not small, but quite significant instead. Most standard chrome lined barrels are lucky to get 2moa accuracy even with match ammo, but good SS barrels are easily sub-moa. Durability is just fine when you're looking to use it in a multi-purpose capacity, and you'll get upwards around 20k rounds through it before it's shot out.

Barrels are disposable items and are the biggest key to accuracy in any platform. Don't go cheap when you want precision.

In my understanding Chrome moly was accurate as well, but chrome lining hurts accuracy potential a little because it is difficult to deposit uniformly.

SR25's had chrome moly barrels- they were accurate. Savage rifles are chrome moly and accurate.

I agree with SS as the way to go though. Easier cleaning, also accurate, and longer wearing as well as corrosion resistant.

+1. Great advice. Go cheapo on other spots if you need to save a few coins. Trigger, barrel and optic = areas to spend money on.
