wondering if I set up a barricade on a 100 yard range to practice would it be worth my while to do. Since longer ranges are several hours drive. Stan

to me, it's still worth it.

but at that point you need to try to get all your shots in a 1moa or smaller circle. so basically shoot for tight groups.

put yourself under a timer, and practice setting up positions and getting steady. the better you get, the "groups" will get smaller.

of course longer ranges would be BETTER, but you can still get valuable practice at 100yds. just need to make your target smaller.

Absolutely effective for practice, I do it all the time especially when weather is bad and I'd rather shoot under cover than out in the rain where my long range targets are.

Print out a paper target with a 1MOA center dot and a 2 MOA outer ring, then shoot from the barricade running stage drills and transitions and timing yourself to add a bit of pressure. Score yourself at the end of the day how may shots you dropped outside of 1 MOA or 2MOA and try to improve from the last trip.

You aren't going to learn much about wind, but if you can get good at this you will make huge progress on your positional shooting.

In one years time I went from 16th place at the local club match to top 40 in the PRS finale and the bulk of my practice was dry firing from a barricade I built and kept in my back yard. Your 100 yard range is an excellent place to practice. I recommend running your barricade drill at least 3 times dry firing for every one time you run it with live fire.

We’re challenged for distance here as well. The local range only goes to 475 yards so I bought smaller steel silhouettes & built a barricade.

Shooting prone was pretty boring at that range. Smaller targets & a barricade at varying ranges will humble you. The upside is you’ll become a better shooter.

Any trigger time is better than no trigger time in my opinion! The range at my house only goes out to 200 yards I have steel setup at a 100 and 200 yards I have noticed I learn a lot more about what I am doing right and wrong when I am shooting paper at those distances. Just like @Sheldon N said the paper will always tell you where you are at. Steel will lie to you but paper will never lie.

I got into NRL22 this year for similar reasons. Long range is about twice the distance and my 200m range. My old Ruger 10/22 in a Magpul stock with a Vortex Diamondback scope running cheap and good shooting CCI SV ammo is a great way to practice positional shooting at 5¢ a trigger press.

Build on in your back yard i practice with it dry firing at screw holes. Aim small miss small.
