Base line accuracy

A guy at the range was trying to tell his buddies that he can shoot 8" groups at 1K with his ruger #1 yet all day long the best group I witnessed through my scope was about 1.5" so I know he's full of crap. But it made me wonder: What do you consider "base line" accuracy for a gun at 100yds. to be capable of hitting, with any consistency, at 1K?

Re: Base line accuracy

I always love when people say "All day long!" as it is the flag I need to hear to completely shut down listening to an idiot when talking about guns. The gun to shoot consistent 8 inch groups at 1,000 yards is a lot easier than the technique and ability to read and adjust for the wind.

When you hear stuff like that strongly encourage the idiot to show up at the next long range match in the area as if he can shoot that well he will easily place well in many comps. When in a bad mood at the range I will sometimes challenge the "All day long!" crew to a little shoot off with a little money on the side. Luckily my main range has few of the ADL folks and my days are good.

Most people who spend much time on the 1,000 yard line realize how hard maintaining 1 MOA day after day is.

My two cents,

Re: Base line accuracy

Accuracy never increase like an MOA per yard line so 1.5" Accuracy at 100 is not very good at all and will more than likely translate to over 25" at 1000 yards. Unless he is shooting a bunch of shots and then counting the closest 3 like a lot of people do, including some gun writers in the magazines.

It's more like adding

1.25X 200
1.5X 300
1.75X 400
2x 500
2.5x 600
2.75x 700
3x 800

and so on... unless you (or he) are a world class shooter in the top 10% it almost never translates to what you get in terms of MOA accuracy at 100 to 1000.

As was said above me, "all day long" is definitely a red flag, as well, "if I do my part" is another clue, chances are his part is never up to snuff.

Re: Base line accuracy

Here is a thought. With a 308, 30" tube, the best F TR Shooters in the World have never cleaned a 10" circle at 1000 yards, for 15-22 rds. Thats roughly 1 moa but having to hit where you aim. The enviornment comes into play at a 1000 yards. Now those same weapons will put ten rds into a quarter sized group at 200 yards so there is no linear equation I know to calculate the results

I would say anytime you can go on moa at a grand your shooting damm well

Re: Base line accuracy

Yeah, I figured he was full of crap. I was easily out shooting him out to 300yds where he was happy to put three out of five on a paper plate. I guess he never looked at my targets before opening his mouth. Anyway, I know I can't hold that well at 1000. In fact, I haven't attempted it yet (maybe it's time). I should have called him on it but in the spirit of "what ever" I kept my mouth shut.

Re: Base line accuracy

I would say that the gun and shooter need to be at least capable of holding 1/2 MOA at 100 yds. The fact is that as the bullet slows towards the target, all of the factors of the environment are going to become more and more of a factor. Therefore, even with the best shooters being able to hold 1/2 MOA and better, they will not be shooting that at 1000 yds consistently, especially not with a 308 Win. I shoot F-T/R class matches with some very talented shooters and they are not even remotely close to being able to hold that and I certainly can't.

Re: Base line accuracy

You can work it out by working backwards if you know what I mean?

First decide what group size is aceptable to you at maximum range. Then divide this group size by the total time of flight of the bullet in seconds, divided by the time of flight to 100 yards. This will give you a 100 yard group size.

Then the tricky bit. You need to throw in a factor for your ability as a shooter and wind reader. Good luck.

Re: Base line accuracy

armchair sniper. A ruger #1 will never be that accurate at 600 yds (in my opinion) A nice hunting rifle it may be but folks not shooting a system designed for 1k won't get there consistently and accurately. Just remember, everyone likes attention from time to time, some folks just weren't hugged enough as children. LOL I am listening to one such individual in my AO right now. A nice guy but he is a one upper just because he craves attention...... my .02
