So my buddy and I headed up into Chugach National Forest this weekend to do some upland bird hunting. Unfortunately, the weather went to hell in a handbasket, so we packed it up after a while and headed back down the trail. Along the way, we passed several spots where the bears were still camped out fishing for dog salmon along Portage creek. The trail was literally paved with huge piles of bear scat and discarded chunks of salmon, so as I was stepping around the land mines, I looked down and thought to myself "Hey, Bears eat berries, and I'd love to have some salmonberries, blueberries, watermelonberries and the like in my garden". So I grabbed a ziploc baggie and collected me some pre-fertilized native berry seeds.

anybody else got some zany "I'm gonna make this day in the woods worthwhile" stories?

You know they now sell seeds ready to plant in nice clean packets at most stores. Just say'n.

I'd wonder how many seeds you actually got if they're feasting on salmon to fatten up for the winter they're probably not eating much as far as berries go so you might just have a bag of shit.

hahaha yeah, I'll see about getting a picture of the mess up. the amount of seeds in the scat was rather amazing- it looked like more seeds than poo. But this also brings up a great point of how the salmon are an excellent way for nutrients to be mined from the ocean fish swims out, eats a bunch of stuff out there, comes back in, bear eats it, eats some blueberries, and drops those nutrients gained from the ocean into a convenient seed-filled pile.

besides, I'm pretty sure I can't get watermelonberry, salmonberry, or knicknick berry seeds from any supplier
