Hunting & Fishing Bears and Cougars W/ a Varmint caller?

Re: Bears and Cougars W/ a Varmint caller?

they work great... better make sure electronics are legal in your state for Big game/ Trophy animals before you buy one.

I have called it 3 Mtn. Lions and 2 bear now using my FOXPRO.

Lightning Jack, Fawn distress, calf elk, etc.

I have had luck with calling longer and more often than I do for coyotes. I even change up the sounds and mix in some hand calling with the sequence.

Knowing there are critters around is the key. Find a kill, tracks, talk with the landowners... Just like coyotes, they need to be there to hear the calls.

Good luck!

We have to use hand calls here in Montana for game animals including bear and lion. I've called in a handful of both over the years. Always gets the blood flowing when they show up instead of a coyote!!

I would think the best time would be when deer and elk are dropping fawns, throw up the fawn in distress and pray....with your back to a tree

I heard a story about a guy calling Turkeys, calling away and all the sudden around the tree comes a cougar paw and knocked him about 6'. Cougar turned and walked away, left the guy there laying in the leaves thanking his lucky stars.

The foxpro works awesome for both. I personally watched my friends call in bear and mtn lion using the jackrabbit distress call. Like mentioned above, make sure its legal and call for a long time. baiting is not legal in AZ either.

I've got a good buddy in Washington state who specifically targets lions. He uses an e-caller in conjunction with his own hand calls to imitate the social 'whistling' or 'chirping' sounds that lions make. This man has called in & killed a small handfull of lions & actually called in & shot one on video last season by himself! Most assuredly, the pinnacle of predator calling!!!

do a lot of calling @ night around here in OR. & it's always in the back of my mind if I ever accidentally have a big cat stalk-in when coyote or bobcat calling .

very interesting sounds other that growls or screams . pretty short clip ( Less than 1 min.) .

When you make noise like prey species on the menu of the aforementioned lion and bear, you would be surprised what you can call in.

Kitty number one and number two. By the way, YOU are now on the menu!

Re: Bears and Cougars W/ a Varmint caller?

I was using hand calls. I howled to locate a pack of far off coyotes, and then attempted to bring them in with some distress and hurt pup sounds too. Look what showed up at our 6 o'clock! There were actually two separate packs. I wondered why they wouldn't commit to come in. They sounded very interested, just wouldn't come to the calls. Now I know why! Cats were exactly 300m.

This mountain lion was called in and shot using an open reed hand call. It showed up at less than 100 yards. Shot with a .220 swift.
