been wanting to put together a paper-punch n hunt 308 for a while. when i found that i wasn't gonna have to pay in on taxes i sold my old cheap rem 770 243 and let it fly.
This site has helped a lot with many of my choices on this.
It started with a good ebay deal on the scope then...
remington 700 sps varmint 308
EGW HD 20 MOA rail
Burris tactical rings (low)
Bell & Carlson A3 light tactical stock
Grove Tec flush cups
Tab sling
old pivot bipod i've had
USO rail mount anti cant
The scope is a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 mil dot w/sunshade
(if i had found this site before i got the scope i would have got something that 1/10 mil adjust but oh well maybe later)
last is a little rattle can work and TA DA.

I shot it with the factory stock a few times and got a couple 1" groups shooting off a dog food bag. hopefully sunday i'll get to go re zero and see what happens.

the uso anti cant won't fold in with the cover on it. Dang it. i'll just leave the cover off.

of course i have more i want to do to it thanks to you bunch of... never mind. if had never found this site i would consider this thing done.

once i get it zeroed again i've got to stretch it out and try some 500yd plus shots. i've never shot past 500. i'm getting gitty thinkin about it.

i've done a couple like this and they've turned out lookin pretty good.

1 tape off everything you don't want painted (like scope numbers) prep with rubbing alcohol or min spirts and a scotch bright pad.

2 spray entire gun with base color (in this instance tan).

3 cut some various thickness card board strips. Shoe box card board works great cause it's heavy enough not to blow away from the spraying but easy to cut.

4 toss card board over gun in random pattern and spray next color of choice spuradically in different places on the gun. rotate cun and repeat.

5 pick up next next color and repeat step 4

when ur done stick the card board strips in a bag for next time.

it's just the krylon ultra flat camo tan, brown, and green from lowes, i think wally world has it too. As long you scuff and clean everyhting it seems to hold up great.

i got to fire off 7 shots yesterday. and got a 1.25" 4 shot and 3 shot group. I was not as steady as i could have been; I need to practice a bit but i'm happy with the rifle. When i get to go by myself with no rush sometime this week i'll get some group pics in here.

Dude that is almost straight up what I did. I have upgraded the glass now to NF, but I will say after shooting almost the EXACT same setup (minus the sling and USO level), I was well pleased with the Nikon. I take it your a budget hunter/paper puncher like me. Good to see there are others!

thanks for the compliments
a rifle is a small surface where textured is acceptable and flat paint is easy. You never know what you can do till you try.
custom auto stuff is another of my hobbies it consists of getting hand laid fiber glass to look flat and paint must have a mirror finish. this flat paint stuff is easy.

our tastes are scary close. This started as a "dang it i want a nice rifle" project; when i started putting this together i thought i was taking an expensive route but thanks to the guys on forums like this i can tell the wife i'm cheap.

looks like the 175gr grouped great. twice sunday i'ld shoot 2 shots that were touching then i would flinch a little and know the 3rd was off before it hit the target blowing my groups to 1.25".

I will say that the HSM has worked well for me. However, that group I showed you was shot off of a lead sled (and I have repeatably done so). When it is just me things tend to open up another .25" or so. Which tells me, I have work to do. The rifle definitely shoots better than I can at the moment.

I kept my nikon on there for a little over a year then I dropped cash into the medium $$$ range and got a NF. DEFINITELY worth it. Added another pound to the rifle, but that 22x and the glass are worth the investment I believe. SOOOOO....your rifle isn't quite expensive enough yet...

The "bones" are a sick touch. Well done.

I forgot to ask, have you messed with the trigger yet? it is adjustable...even though it is factory, it can get better. Just have to remove the glue over the allen head screw on the trigger assembly and increase or decrease to your liking. Mine is sitting at ~2 lbs. Made a difference for me in groups. I think it was factory set at 7-8 from the feel of things.

i've got the trigger as light as i can get it. then beat on it to make sure it's safe and it feels good. i couldn't get the one in the rear of the trigger assembly to loosen. the one in the trigger itself seems like i could just take it out it is barely in.

here's what happened sunday prone off the bipod. i know flinched a little on #3 in both groups. i measured the groups, one 1.1" the other 1.4". i'm letting it sit for 2.5-3 min between shots, not sure if i really need to let it sit that long. i think i can do .75"-.5" groups if i take my time. maybe i'll get to try again soon.

here's a couple pics of the set up. i mowed a couple places out in the hay field to make 200yds. the 100yd shots were straight off the tail gate.
i can group my marlin 17hmr sub .75" 5 shot groups at 100yds off the tail gate so this is a bit dissapointing.

shooting factory 168gr hornady amax i got a ok 3 shot group in the middle (flinched on #4). then moved out to 200. this is my 1st attempt at 200 with this kind of setup and prone at 200 period so i was seeing just how consistant i might be and didn't touch the scope. i was aiming at the top target center and got about 8"s of drop at 200 but not a bad group i don't think for a noob. i wasn't expecting 8" of drop. to check it out i moved back to 100 and went at the top right of the same target. again #4 screwed me so i didn't include it in the group (makes me feel better anyway). the 2 shots with Xs are cheap brown bear stuff at 100 aiming at center of target man that stuff sucks.

time to clean the toy and hope for another pretty day i don't have to work after work.
any suggestions? i know i need to practice a spotting scope and reloading will be my next investments.

forgot to mention i'm letting it sit for 2.5-3 min between shots.

^^^^ you might want to try 175 SMK or the 155 SMK rounds they will both do good out to 1000

the 8" drop sort of stunned me. on the ballistics charts and programs i've seen the drop should have been about 4" with the 168gr amax factory loads. i shouldn't see 8" of drop till 300 yds

anybody else experiance this. Maybe i should check the accurracy of my range finder it has been beat around a lot.

alright i got a nice day to play and tried a few things. used a dog food bag as a rest and left the scope on 10x instead of crankin it to 16x. These are the results i was lookin for.

the range

shooting the same factory 168 grain hornady amax
5 shot groups. 100 yds .75". 200 yds 1.8".
the results

lookin forward to my next free day to play. i got a box of factory 178 hornady bthp to try out.
