When bench rest shooting I set up with two bags. I place the rifle square to target and then sit directly behind rifle. I feel comfortable that way and seems to manage recoil better. At the range all are sitting off to the left side of rifle. Which is a better way and why?.

Standing behind the bench square to the rifle. Leaned/bent over. Everything else the same as prone.

Basically you are creating a modified prone position.

Anything set up from the side is going to present issues in fundamentals.

Thanks. I sit on the stool directly behind gun like shooting laying prone.
One explained to me that you should be sitting to the side of the gun. He said that is how you hold the gun when standing to shoot. Body awa from target and gun shoulder head turned looking at target

That’s only if you are shooting unsupported and standing.

Also, you likely won’t get the full effect seated. Standing you can get up on your elbows better.

Stop listening to stupid fudds

The very few times that I go to a public range I ignore anyone and everyone who tries to engage with me.
