Ok, so I have been trying to practice the online training concepts but I have to fire from the bench instead of prone. I did shoot some nice groups with the SRS in 338 Lapua at 100 yards but found that since I am not straight behind the rifle that it always recoils to the left and I loose sight of the target and have to adjust (x25 power). Shooting off a solid cement bench. I am angled on the bench such that my body is at a position that will cause the rifle to recoil this way (somewhat of a 45 degree angle with relation to the rifle). Any recommendations to stay on target after the shot on the bench?

Re: Bench Shooting

I am in the same position as you. For some reason prone shooting is verboten here, at all shooting ranges.

I am not sure there is an answer other than to shoot prone. I've tried so many things.

I want to retire to the boonies and build my own range......

Re: Bench Shooting

If your bench is wide enough at the back, try getting straight behind the rifle with your shoulders square to the target. Nothing says you have to use the bench in the conventional manner. Good Luck.

Re: Bench Shooting

That is how I shoot from my public range when I am not doing load development. It is at least a little more practical... and it kinda helps with recoil too.

Re: Bench Shooting

After trying just about everything, I've finally concluded that Charles'/Sterling's advice is right on.

IMHO, nothing beats two hands on the rifle in the conventional manner. Support the hand, and not the rifle. Everything else is contrived and unnatural.

x2.....I will be giving this a try as well.

The range I shoot at lets the grass grow so some guy can hay it. Needless to say, my prone shooting went bye bye quite some time ago.
