Bergara BMP or something else?

I am wanting to get into precision rifle shooting, But it is totally new to me. I’ve been reading on here for awhile trying to educate myself. I have decided on 6.5 CM. I have a hookup and can get a Bergara BMP for $760 brand new. Should I jump on this deal or is there something else I should be considering. From what I can tell it’s a screaming deal on what seems to be a solid beginner rifle. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Bergara makes quality stuff. That price is more than a steal - downright robbery.

I have that same rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor , love it and would recommend it to anyone, I paid 1K for mine online, local shops were 1250 - 1500, for 760.00 thats an awesome deal...

DO IT!!! Just don't go over to the optics forum to ask if you should buy a crap scope or to ask if you should do mil or moa.

Seriously for that price it's a great quality rifle to start with.

Jump on it. Even for a grand it’s still a very nice rifle. I have the BMP Chassis on one of my Origin action builds and have been very happy with it.

I have a BMP and am happy with it.

The only issues that I've had are:

The diameter of firing pin hole in the bolt face is too large and the diameter of the firing pin is too small. When shooting any of the Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor ammo, I've found that the primer is cratered due to metal from the primer flowing around the firing pin and into the gap between the firing pin and firing pin hole. I've had 1 punctured primer which caused the firing pin to become stuck in the bolt. I could operate the bolt, but the firing pin would not move when the trigger was pulled. This required the disassembly of the bolt to remove the small bit of primer metal that had gotten inside. I plan to send the bolt to Gre-Tan Rifles to have the firing pin hole bused and new firing pin made.

When shooting from a prone position, I needed to add spacers to the but pad to increase the length of pull. Bergara does not make or sell these. Luckily there was a Sniper's Hide member that made a few for me. Adding 4 spacers made it work for me...

The spacers for length of pull is subjective - I am 5.7 and thats not an issue for me . My BMP is a 2019 manufacture date and I just pulled the bolt out and checked it has the smaller hole for the FP..

I got one a few years ago that became my sons rifle. It didn’t shoot factory ammo very well or very consistently. One day it would do 3/4moa and the next it was 1 1/4. This was with Hornady precision hunter. I started handloading and got it to a consistent 1/2 - 3/4. We also put it in a KRG bravo stock. Using Lapua brass had the same problem mentioned earlier, the firing pin hole needed bushed. I had pierced primers, but after sending it to gretan problem solved.

Can’t speak for mine yet as I am still awaiting my badger rail and my rings so shooting mine right now wouldn’t tell you anything important.

That out of the way I will say this, I purchased mine online for I think $938ish shipped before having to pay the local FFL’s fees. That was the best deal I could find and the FFL mentioned that he wasn’t allowed to go under $999 (cough*.... maybe?). My point is I wish I had your friends, go steal that thing up man.

I got my BMP from Scheels. It was listed at $1499 but they price-matched an on-line ad at $1250. I'm shooting a Hornady 140gr ELD with 41.5gr RL16. Getting sub-MOA ~.8 so far (first 30 rounds). I have followed their break-in recommendation - not sure that it's essential, but it can't hurt either.

I'm using new Lapua brass with the large primer - CCI BR2.

Thanks for responding, could you tell me what member made the stock spacers for you. I’m 6’4” so I will most likely need them.
Does anyone have recommendations for factory ammo that shoots well out of this gun. I know every gun is different just looking for a starting point, like manufacture and bullet weight.

I'd jump on that BMP and smile all the way to the range. I have the HMR which is essentially the same rifle minus the chassis and 2" of barrel. Buddy has the BMP. He is shooting a .565" 5 shot group with factory 120 grain ELD. I'm down to .477" with hand loads from my HMR.

I'm having a hard time convincing him to handload for the rifle.
