Berger Bullets - I'm nearly insane!!!!

I've waited for months to receive shipment of 6.5mm 130 & 140 grain Bergers for hunting. Now I'd talked to Sinclair International at length and told them what I wanted. The guy at Sinclair never said that the 130 and 140s were intended for 1:8 barrels, nor did I have the presence of mind to ask. Today, I get the shipment and like a little kid, I tear the box open with my teeth to get to the goodies inside. THERE THEY ARE, my new Bergers. Printed on the labels though are the words "For 1 in 8 twist or faster" *$&#^#*@(@#&*@ I'VE GOT 1:9 BARRELS!!!!

Do I send them back or do I try to use them? If I send them back, what do you suggest I exchange them for? I just developed a load using IMR4831 using 140g SMKs that I'm happy with but I want to try the hunting Bergers.

Excuse me while I pound my head against the wall.

I've got a 24 inch 1 in 9 twist Krieger on mine and it shots the 140 VLD's fabulously well with H4350. Don't think I'd fret too much over what you've got.

I say give 'em a go!

Oh yeah, it's a 260 Rem.

Re: Berger Bullets - I'm nearly insane!!!!

I have a wildcatted .264 Win Mag with a 1/9 twist barrel, it loves 140 grain bullets of just about any flavor. Load them up, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Make sure you follow the seating depth instructions on Bergers website. They really are very seating depth sensitive.

Once you find the sweet spot. They are hard to beat!!!

As far as for hunting. They are fantastic.

1+. I am sure that there are plenty of people who will take them off your hands for you.

Re: Berger Bullets - I'm nearly insane!!!!

They should work in the 1/9 twist, especially if youre running fast. And I wouldnt worry about the seating depth for hunting use, just load them the longest mag length you can and call it a day. I havent had to shoot a 3 or 5 round group into a deer yet, so I dont even test my for groups, just cold bore zeros, from 100 out to 550yards. So far, since I started testing the Bergers last season, and now using them exclusively now, I have killed 10 deer with them (including the first one that is in the Berger catalog with yours truly) and not one deer has taken one step after being hit....including the one I got this evening. This evenings was hit with a 95gr VLD out of 243.

The only negative I have with them is that sometimes you will clobber the deer only to have to hit it with a coup de grace shot cause you can miss vitals and if you hit anywhere in the spine region, you will paralyze them but not kill em...hit the one tonight in the neck and had to finish it off when I got to it....but its in the freezer, no tracking.

BTW, this usually only applies to the "hunting" version VLDs, but I have also killed deer with the BTs just as effectively, though neither I or Berger recommend using them.

Re: Berger Bullets - I'm nearly insane!!!!

The recommended twist for the 140's used to be 1:9". Due to some questionable reports from shooters in EXTREMELY CHALLENGING CONDITIONS for stability, the recommended twist was changed to 1:8". In almost every condition to be found on earth, they'll work from a 1:9".

If you're below sea level, a high pressure system is in your area, air temperature is below zero degrees, and your muzzle velocity is less than 2500 fps, you might have a problem with a 1:9". Otherwise you'll be fine.

Take care,
-Bryan
