I an looking into buying a California legal 308 firearm for long range target shooting. I have about $2000 to spend. I was originally looking at AR15s with 24" Bull Barrel but was told that if I want to do long range it would be better to go with a 308 like an R 700 or AR10??? This will be my first firearm so I could use some suggestions as to a good entry level setup including scope. I am thinking a used setup might allow me to afford something a little better in quality for my $2000????

Here's exactly how I'd spend $2k for a rifle/scope combo.

Remington 700 5r Stainless, might run you $950.

Seekins 20moa base and 30mm low rings, $200.

Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 mil/mil scope (available in a couple months) $850 street prics.

Rule the world. A guy could hunt, shoot LR and even shoot in a competition or two with that package. Add a detachable mag setup someday and/or switch out the stock....but for a first rifle you wouldn't need to do that for at least a couple years.

FN PBR barreled action, non chrome-lined barrel at CDNN: $499
McMillan A3: $525
Bedded by GAP: $250
Super Sniper 3-9x scope: $699
Badger rings $ 149

Or, a 5R Milspec as mentioned above.

I second that suggestion (err..the first one). The scope may be a bit high on the magnification side, but in general start simple. Much can be learned with a basic .308 bolt gun and decent glass - you've got a lot to do to build a solid foundation in precision shooting.

Also, no problems with bolt guns in CA.

Re: Best .308 CA legal under $2000???

If this is your very first rifle, then I'd suggest buying a .22LR rifle and learn to shoot alot cheaper, such as a Savage MkII, they run less than $400 and that leaves you money to buy a nice scope, and enough bullets to get you learning.

If this is not your first rifle, do what the guys before me said,

If it were me I would do this:
Remington 700 SPS Tactical ($600)
SS 3-9x42mm ($600)
Reloading supplies ($800) this will get you alot of supplies

Hope this helps you out,

My scope choice was based on newer guys typically wanting higher magnification than the guys here who are shooting tactical comps and stuff. Higher mag scopes typically build confidence and let you easily spot your own hits at the range (up to 300 yards with shoot and see targets) so he doesn't have to buy a spotting scope too.

One of the reasons I recommended what I did is that new guys don't want to wait for McMillan stocks and GAP bedding, hell it could be 9 months before he shoots that one.
