best Brake for 338 lapua and 300 win mag

What is the best brake for a 338 lapua? Plan (Right now) is amu taper 28 inch barrel and lawton 8500 manners or mcmillan stock.
Also what about 300 win mag. It is going on predator action with rock number 5 LV 26" barrel in HTG stock.
ALso where you would buy them.

I have a double chamber brake for my AIAWSM 338 LM. Works very well. For my 300 WM, I have the BO FTE. Works awesome. Hardly felt the recoil. Not so fun the guys adjacent to me though

I have never tried the Badger FTE. I own a AI AWSM .338 with the 2 chamber brake, but my .300 Ultra Mag with the APA Fat Bastard is the most effective brake I have ever used personally.

I have only had the one. But I had a JP rifles brake on my .300 WSM. While it was an ugly thing the recoil felt like a .223, it was very affective.

I have the FTE on 2 of my rifles. Just got it installed on 2 more. Its the only break I use on my heavy cal bolt guns.

Is the clamp on the FTE just for timing or does it bottom out on the threads then the clamp just holds it there? The clamp thing's just kind of throwing me off a little. Does the barrel have to be specially turned for the last inch or so them threaded? Is it a big difference between it and the Badger Thruster?

The smith will have to machine a shoulder a little ways back after the threads for the brake to clamp on to.

PM Hooper on here or some of the other smiths and they can explain it to you more in detail. I had Hooper do my last 2 and they turned out great.

The FTE does not bottom out on a shoulder. The bearing surface machined behind the threads needs to be within the specs supplied in the installation instructions and the brake clamps on there. If done correctly, the muzzle will be flush with the first chamber of the brake.

The "Clamp" part of the brake just puts pressure on the bearing surface that your smith would machine there which is a tight fit to begin with if done to spec.

Thanks Hooper. Is there a minimum muzzle diameter to look right? I think the Fat Bastard says something like .900. What about the FTE. My number 5 LV is .875.

I think the bearing surface needs to be machined to somewhere around .800" as I do not have the specs in front of me. I have installed them on many Remington Varmint and savage heavy barrels.

So your .875" barrel will work. The FTE uses a .625 x 24tpi thread. The barrel diameter needs to be at least the bearing surface spec. to work.

Hooper which FTE should I user on the .875 the 3/4 or the 5/8? Also where can I get them from? Triad has the 3/4 but not the 5/8 in stock.

Also look at the SureFire .338 brake.
Even if you are not condidering a suppressor down the road, the SF is a very effective brake. Many on here are using them with many rounds down range and excellent results.

I have one of a .338LM that is used for demo, etc. 2,060 rounds with many different people shooting it and all had favorable comments when shooting without the suppressor mounted.
