best digital scale for the money?

My trusty old RCBS powder scale is dying a slow and painful death.

RCBS-304-600x450.jpg

The scale no longer is consistant and the loads are varying horribly. I'm no longer doing basic reloading so the typical scale simply is not accurate (accurate as in repeatable) for me.

Besides the mythical Prometheus II which I can't find anywhere, what are the really accurate options, and I'm talking about better than the digital Lymans, RCBS, PAC, etc?

ideas anyone?

Re: best digital scale for the money?

+1 on RCBS Chargemaster. If you need to go more accurate than that, after buying the Chargemaster, pickup a VIC-123 although I only break that out for benchrest loads.

Re: best digital scale for the money?

Have you contacted RCBS regarding refurbishing your beam scale? They may be able to help you.

The Promethius II is available, but expensive. Many are finding the ChargeMaster Combo serviceable.

I have not been able to make contact regarding the Promethius scales. I might have old contact info. We're talking about brandx, correct? Yes, that scale is extreme, but I have never heard that it was not worth it.

Re: best digital scale for the money?

I know that you are wanting a new set of scales but I think you can have the ones you have refurbished rcbs or Ohanus(sp). You might call the rcbs 800 number and find out.
Besides IMHO you have the best set up for precision loading anyway.

I have the RCBS Chargemaster Combo and like it alot. My beam scale is now collecting dust, except for the ocassional backup check of the digital.

Several years ago I picked up a Mettler (don't remember the model) analytical scale on ebay from a laboratory that was taking them out of service (there were no problems but the co. policy was to replace at a certain age) Way overkill but for someone as anal as i am it is just the ticket)

Yeah if you can find a Mettler Analytical balance that some lab is getting rid of, it will measure accurately to the 1/100th of a grain. I did and mine does.

Before that, I had the Acculab VIC123. Its a good scale but its really only accurate to the tenth of a grain. It displays to the 100th place but that digit floats a lot. I sold the VIC123 and picked up the RCBS Chargemaster combo. And that my friend is all you need. (Unless you have a couple thousand laying around that you want to put toward a Prometheus.) It throws very accurate charges and its quick and easy to change powders and charge weights.

Re: best digital scale for the money?

PACT is made in the US has EXCELLENT customer service and goes to a 10th of a grain and priced reasonable
they make scales for most of the big names also

Re: best digital scale for the money?

ranger don't get rid of that scale, send it to scott parker.661.364.1199 and he'll rework it for around 40 dallars. When it comes back it will be better than new you will be able to count grains with it. My uncle works for toledo and he got me a mettler lab grade scale a fow years back its a awsome scale but its way more than what I need for reloading. The problem with the cheap grade digital scale is there speed and repeatability(because there just cheap), ask any chemist what steps they must go through to keep there scales acurate and repeatable. I've compared my mettler to my buddies acculab 123(what a joke) but I will say it's a not a fair comparison.

Imo your better off fixing what you have or you can buy a new one for around 150.

Re: best digital scale for the money?

I have an RCBS Rangemaster scale. It's good to go as far as i am concerned. The only catch is you have to let it "warm up" if it's been stored cold. If you try to jump right into it while the scale is still cold it will wander a couple of tenths until it's warm.

I would like to find a precision beam scale like yours for those times when I want to be super anal.

Re: best digital scale for the money?

I've had limited but great results from my Lyman 1000 xp. It's been very reliable so far. I don't have another digital to compare it to but it certainly seems to be spot on!
