I currently own a Remington .308 model 700. I live in Texas and hunt everything from Whitetail deer to wild hogs with some exotics mixed in. I am not reloading yet, but I am looking for advice on a good hunting bullet out to about 500 yards. Any suggestions and information is appreciated.

They all will work.....

that being said, for deer I would look at a the 155amax. For max penetration I would choose the Barnes TSX in 150grains.

Re: Best Factory .308 Hunting Bullet?

Ive been reloading for a few years now but if I had to go out and buy factory ammunition I would have to go with the Federal Fusion ammo. I've seen first hand how the fusion bullet is made and the technology behind it and you would be hard pressed to find anything on the market that will do what that bullet will do for the PRICE you pay for them. Check the price on a box of Nosler premium ammo at the store and then compare it to the Fusion and you will see what I mean. The bullet itself was first designed for the .308 and is loaded from .223 to 300WM. Im loading the new speer Deep Curls, which is the Fusion bullet equivalent. It has the same technology but is more reloader friendly. The fusion ammo will kill anything you want to kill with that .308 with ease. IF you want any more specifics let me know.

I would try several different factory loads with the barnes x bullet. I have been using cheap PMC with the barnes x for years and have yet to see a bullet come apart in any of the whitetails I have shot. If your hunting for meat these are the way to go.

Any comments on the accuracy of factory loads for hunting out to 500 yards?

Cant say ive gone that far out with anything factory and with local prices being stupid for factory ammo i cant see myself trying any time soon.
