So guys I have been trying to help out my brother in law. he is looking for a bolt gun for whitetail hunting in Michigan so realistic range is 200yds and under. He is on a real tight budget and everything im stearing him towards if a little pricey. Graham has an icon for sale in the $600 range and that was more than what he was looking for. He is trying to stay around $500 w/ basic glass. Any ideas, I'm not well versed in available firearms in that price range.

Pawn shop Remington 700 or Savage in .308, .30-06, 270, etc. then a decent scope like a budget-minded Nikon, etc.

Savage 11 FCXP (bargain complete hunting rig available at Cabelas, etc. for around $400 incl. a 3-9x scope in calibers like .308, .30-06, .270, etc.).

Walmart!! They carry several low end Remington 700 models in several calibers with a scope for less than $500. Stay away from the 710 and 770 models.

I agree on the savage, they are low cost and usually pretty accurate. And they are easy to rebarrel if he wants a different caliber or better barrel.

I would say buy teh rifle used in a pawn shop, here on teh hide, or a REPUTABLE website that sells guns.
Then, pick up like a Nikon, or the like for glass. I wouldn't buy optics from a pawn shop though. If buying used glass, would buy from a long time member here on teh hide that has good reputation.

I would leave atleast $200 for optic, that's the bare minimum your going to get a halfway decent scope for that will be reliable enough to put on a deer rifle. That leaves very few options for a rifle.
If it's just a 200 yard deer hammer it doesn't have to be anything special, for under $300 you can pick up a NEF or H&R handi rifle or savage edge/axis that would more than do the trick. For a little more $$ and what would be my personal preference due to the availability of parts incase he ever wanted to upgrade would be to watch the forums and gunbroker for a used remington ADL, you can get them for anywhere from $250-400.

Stevens 308,30-06 or 270 package with scope. Add a rifle basix or SSS trigger for an additional 100 and your total should be well under your price point.

My local Wal-Mart has the Savage Axis for $267+tax. It comes with Weaver style bases. EGW has a pic rail for the Axis for $46 shipped which gives some mounting options as the included bases, even on the short calibers, are spaced pretty wide. As for a scope, sub $100 Bushnells have killed a freight train load of deer. AG

Personally, mentioned by a few others, Savage Axis/Edge, base, rings, Bushnell 3200 3-9 as they're very cheap right now and cleaning out remaining stock.

Honestly, I know this isn't the cool guy rifle here, but more deer have been killed with a 30-30 within 200 yards than likely any other caliber out there.
A saw a whole rack of Marlins and Winchesters in a pawn shop. Not a single one of them were priced over 300.
Top one off with a nice little 4x or 6x and you will have a deer killing machine.
Or take a look at GB. The 94s with the scope mount are traditionally less desirable and bring less money. If I wanted a sub 200y whitetail rifle, it would be a Marlin 336 with a 4 or 6x weaver on it.

I would keep checking those pawn shops. Last month I bought a rem700 in fine hunting shape with a leupold vxiii for $375 out the door. There out there just stop by all the pawn shops on your way to and from and I'm sure you'll stir up something.

I didn't see anyone say the T/C venture, not quite as nice as an Icon. Brand new 243, 7-08, 30tc is $450 at our local shop. guarentee 1 moa, decent trigger too.

theres a rem 700 .243 thats here on the hide for $490...you could probably find cheap glass to put on and upgrade the scope later...i know its over 500 budget but just a thought...love my 243 and works well on deer

if you are patient enough, you can find a tevens on the clearance rack at gander mountain or coupons in the sunday newspaper to bring the rifle in under $275 before tax.
sling - butler creek stretchy one or "winchester" sling at walmart under $15.00
caldwell bipod (harris knockoff) 40.00 or under
scope - barska swat model, simmons, bushnell, a few others, even a walmart centerpoint 4-16x all under or around $200.00 (some of them come with rings and lens covers) - check out Natchez, good deals

Stevens 200 or mossberg atr: i have no shooting experiance with these but i do have a savage 10fp that is a shooter and a couple 700 so i know first hand you cant go wron with these. I have had a chance to compare the stevens and the atr and i have to say if i wanted to keep it stock and not chage anything i would get the atr 100. But again i dont know how they shoot.

For the 30-30 suggestion there is always the Savage 340. A bolt action 30-30. You can find them for a reasonable price online.

I would buy a Savage, and probably the Axis model. The metal only has a coating on it, but they are very accurate.
I would consider looking on ebay for a used scope. My Weatherby Supreme scope from 20 years ago was incredibly good. You could probably buy a new Savage for close to $300, plus tax. Personally I like the 7mm-08 round the best, and Savage finally is using the 9.5 twist for it.

Be sure to look into the caliber requirements!
I'm pretty sure in Michigan it has to be at least a 270 diameter.
Personally I would stick with a 30 caliber. But I am partial to a 308.

+1 but you will eaily be able to get your trigger and possibly an upgrade to that scope for your budget.

Stick with a .308 or .30-06. I've seen too many deer un-recovered from a .270.
+1 on the Dednutz. They are on my hunting rigs. From .22-250, to .300 Weatherby Mag. They take the recoil from the Wby easily. Lightweight, $50, no lapping, no base/ring connection to deal with.

If a deer isn't recovered from a shot with a 270 it was because of a poor shot, not the round itself. 270 is a fine deer cartridge and has been been one of the top choices for a reason. No caliber will make somebody who is a poor shot any more deadly on deer.

I set up a marlin XL7 in .270 for my brother with a 3-9 4200 elite with rings, shipping, FFL fees it came to 600 complete. The main advantage of the marlin is that it comes with the better trigger on the base model, you do not get this with the stevens or axis, also you get the scope base and a nice recoil pad. The rifle ended up liking the fairly cheap walmart stocked winchester power point 130 grains, could get a 1 1/4 moa 5 rd group if I waited 5 min between shots (the thin non floated barrel would heat and move), other premium factory ammo did as poorly as 5 moa this cost 200$ for the seven ammo types tested so something else to add to the price
