Hey guys I have just started building a rifle for long range competition. This will be my first rifle for this purpose. I am having a very hard time deciding on a scope for the build. I have looked at the Vortex Gen 2's. And some of the Nightforce NXS's. I would like to have a MRAD adjustments. I am willing to spend around $2,500 for the scope. Any suggestions guys ? Thanks for the time !

Its all on personal preference i think. Depends on if you want MOA or MRAD turrets. Either way check reviews on turret tracking. For comp youll want true 100% return on tracking. Just my thoughts.

Type(s) of competition?

Lots of good scopes out there. For competition, atleast for me, I want:
reliable and repeatable tracking
FFP
at least 20-25x on the high side
mil/mil
a good workable reticle with atleast .5 mil marks
zero stop

You need to first figure out your budget and then look at the scopes in your price range. You got your $2500 budget and looking at the new Vortex Razor II is a good choice. After looking at the scopes in person at SHOT I sold my S&B 3-20x and ordered 2 Razor IIs. They have everything I need in a scope and a very good price for all the features you get. The original Razor is also an excellent scope and you can get them down to $1649 at Cameraland for their "Demo" versions which are basically new scopes.

There are lots of good scopes out there now. Much more than were available 6-8 years ago so it is a tougher choice. Look at the scopes in your price range and find the ones that features will do what you want.

I guess a lot depends on what type of competitions you're planning on. F/FTR?
300m, 600yrd, 1000m?
Tacticle steel at unknown distance where you have to range?
The new NF competition seems pretty great for bench rest.
ROB01 offered some pretty great advice as always. What is you're budget?
I think more info would help you find you're answer.

I would like to work my way to 1000 yard competitions. This will be my first rifle for this. Just trying to get very good components right out of the gate instead of wasting my time.

This sport is kind of like auto racing. To be competitive the equipment becomes more specialized. The best compromise is just that, a compromise. If you haven't already done so, try or at least observe the various types of competitions and decide which appeals to you. Then buy the equipment leaning toward that competition.

Sounds like you should buy the Steiner 5-25x56 with MSR reticle I have posted in the classifieds here. Just what you described.

May I suggest, as you want others opinions for your eyes/rifle/etc. you look at what the top 50 shooters are using. They may know something.

I am learning towards the Vortex Razor Gen II myself.. it would be my first high end "higher end" full featured optic... Seems to offer the same feature sets found in Tier 1 scopes for a bit more value on the dollar.

I have also considered USO & S&B but not sure if I need/want to go there.

Currently the best I own is the SWFA 5-20 FFP and the Vortex PST 6-24 FFP, which are great, but do leave a bit to be desired in various areas. If the Razor Gen II glass meets or exceeds what I have in the SWFA 5-20 I think I would be a very happy camper.
